{"id":10671,"date":"2017-12-07T02:25:09","date_gmt":"2017-12-07T02:25:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/?p=10671"},"modified":"2017-12-09T02:29:32","modified_gmt":"2017-12-09T02:29:32","slug":"eating-out-might-be-devouring-your-food-budget-and-you-probably-have-no-idea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/eating-out-might-be-devouring-your-food-budget-and-you-probably-have-no-idea\/","title":{"rendered":"Eating out might be devouring your food budget \u2013 and you probably have no idea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/amit-sharma-156806\">Amit Sharma<\/a>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/pennsylvania-state-university-1258\">Pennsylvania State University<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you were to guess how much you spend on eating out per month, chances are you\u2019ll miss the mark by a quite a bit. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1096348016685612\">In a recent study<\/a>, I found that adults tend to underestimate how much they spend on eating out by more than twice what they\u2019re actually spending.<\/p>\n<p>This is a significant chunk of cash. So why is there such a big gap between how much we think we spend and how much we actually spend? And how could it be bridged?  <\/p>\n<h2>When \u2018mental accounting\u2019 doesn\u2019t add up<\/h2>\n<p>Self-control isn\u2019t easy, but one way that people try to control how much they spend is by using mental constraints \u2013 or rules of thumb \u2013 to prevent themselves from spending too much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMental accounting,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/m\/mentalaccounting.asp\">a concept<\/a> first proposed by Nobel Laureate in Economics Dr. Richard Thaler, describes how we create a mental ledger for our various monthly budgets, whether it\u2019s food (eating out or buying groceries), transportation (walking or taking a cab) or entertainment (going to the theater or staying in to watch a movie). <\/p>\n<p>Given the brain\u2019s enormous capabilities, you\u2019d expect mental accounting to be pretty effective. Unfortunately, it\u2019s not always helpful in self-control.<\/p>\n<p>Its difficult to resist the temptation to consume, particularly when we\u2019re enticed in so many ways. Think about holiday shopping: You\u2019re at the mall, you\u2019re hungry, you pass the food court \u2013 and catch a whiff of french fries. Sure, you have leftovers back home. But it\u2019s so quick and easy to buy a meal right then and there. A combination of environmental stimulation and a lack of self-control can cause people to act impulsively.<\/p>\n<h2>A problem most aren\u2019t aware of<\/h2>\n<p>In my study, I found evidence to show the limitations of mental accounting.<\/p>\n<p>First I asked participants to estimate their weekly budgets for eating out. Several days later, I asked them the same question. But during the interim, I also had them report, each day, whether they ate out or not, and how they felt about their financial well-being. <\/p>\n<p>By having them make daily notes, it alerted to them to how often they were eating out. So when it came time to ask them, again, to estimate their weekly budget for eating out, the estimates were, on average, more than two times higher than their first estimate. The participants thought they knew how much they were spending on food away from the home, only to later increase their estimates. <\/p>\n<p>My study also found that those who tended to eat out more overall had a bigger gap between their first and second reported budgets. In other words, the more they ate out, the more they underestimated how much they were spending on eating out. <\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most surprisingly, many of the participants weren\u2019t even aware that there was a big difference between their first and second budgets. <\/p>\n<h2>Regaining control<\/h2>\n<p>This phenomenon matters because around the world, people are eating out more than at any point in modern human history. <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=qxILh9tfz9AC&amp;lpg=PA3&amp;ots=P9lvLzw5mG&amp;dq=food%20away%20from%20home%20definition&amp;pg=PA3#v=onepage&amp;q=food%20away%20from%20home%20definition&amp;f=false\">According to most estimates<\/a>, it constitutes as much (or more) than 45 percent of food expenditures in the United States.  <\/p>\n<p>More importantly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2016\/high-income-households-spent-half-of-their-food-budget-on-food-away-from-home-in-2015.htm\">studies have shown<\/a> that those earning less tend to spend a greater proportion of their disposable incomes on eating out. And while eating out doesn\u2019t necessarily need to be unhealthy, people often aren\u2019t aware what\u2019s in the prepared meals we\u2019re buying from restaurants, markets and cafeterias. Researchers are still studying the health consequences of eating out, but they do know that selecting a meal from a menu immediately limits food choices, which could lead to less healthy food decisions. <\/p>\n<p>What to do?<\/p>\n<p>Relying less on mental accounting is a good first step. Writing out a weekly or monthly food budget can reverse these trends. (There are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gottabemobile.com\/best-budget-apps\/\">apps<\/a> that can help with this.)<\/p>\n<p>One way to get a snapshot of your eating out behavior is to track it over the course of a week or two. Make a note every time you eat out, documenting how much you spend, who you eat with and what you order. Understanding the patterns of your choices and behaviors will make lifestyle changes seem less daunting, and self-control more manageable.<\/p>\n<p>The challenges of self-control aren\u2019t new, of course. The Greek philosopher Plato <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/595976-the-first-and-best-victory-is-to-conquer-self-to\">once said<\/a>, \u201cThe first and best victory is to conquer self.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/counter.theconversation.com\/content\/87839\/count.gif?distributor=republish-lightbox-basic\" alt=\"The Conversation\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>But in a culture that implores people to \u201clet loose\u201d and \u201clive a little,\u201d self-control shouldn\u2019t be equated with self-punishment.
