At least, that\u2019s what we thought. A <a href=\"http:\/\/rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org\/embargo?embargoed-uri=http%3A%2F%2Frspb.royalsocietypublishing.org%2Fcontent%2F280%2F1759%2F20130273\">paper published today<\/a> by my colleagues and I in Proceedings of the Royal Society B suggests there is, in fact, only one species of this enigmatic oceanic giant: <a href=\"http:\/\/marinebio.org\/species.asp?id=156\"><em>Architeuthis dux<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Architeuthis<\/em> made headlines earlier this year when the first live footage of the animal \u2013 which you can see in the video below \u2013 was captured. Despite its large size (up to 18 metres in total length), surprisingly little is known of this animal\u2019s basic biology.<\/p>\n<p>Almost all of what we understand about these deep-sea animals comes from studies of dead specimens, often badly damaged, that have been discovered washed up on the shore, floating on the ocean\u2019s surface or recovered from the stomachs of dead sperm whales.<\/p>\n<p>Our paper today \u2013 based on the work of our international team, led by Danish Researcher, Inger Winkelmann \u2013 provides significant insights into the creature\u2019s biology.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>The first live footage of a giant squid, released earlier this year.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>What we did<\/h2>\n<p>We sequenced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medterms.com\/script\/main\/art.asp?articlekey=4401\">mitochondrial genomes<\/a> (mitogenomes) from 43 giant squid individuals collected from around the globe, including five from Australian waters. Others originated in New Zealand, Japan, Spain, South Africa, the Falkland Islands and the USA.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned at the outset of this article, the large dataset revealed the giant squid (<em>Architeuthis dux<\/em>) appears to be only a single species distributed throughout the world\u2019s oceans.<\/p>\n<p>Our study shows the giant squid possesses remarkably low genetic diversity &#8211; 44-times lower than the <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/invertebrates\/facts\/cephalopods\/factsheets\/humboldtsquid.cfm\">Humboldt squid<\/a> and markedly lower than many other comparable oceanic predators such as killer whales and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpi.nsw.gov.au\/fisheries\/recreational\/saltwater\/sw-species\/bigeye-tuna\">big-eye tuna<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This very low level of diversity is surprising for a species that\u2019s likely to possess a large population size and a global distribution.<\/p>\n<p>Analysis of the demographic history of the mitogenome data suggests there has been a relatively recent (in historical terms) marked decline in the global population size of the giant squid \u2013 known as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/scitable\/definition\/population-bottleneck-300\">bottleneck event<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This population crash would have caused a corresponding decline in genetic diversity in the species. We believe it was followed by a population expansion that was estimated to have occurred between 32,000 and 115,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"align-centre\"><img src=\"https:\/\/62e528761d0685343e1c-f3d1b99a743ffa4142d9d7f1978d9686.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/files\/21450\/width668\/j2qm5f7c-1363735008.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">A baby giant squid.<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"attribution\"><span class=\"source\">AAP Image\/Auckland University of Technology<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We can\u2019t explain this population expansion, but it\u2019s possible that a decline in numbers of competitors or predators (such as predatory fish) may have released population size constraints on the giant squid, allowing numbers to swell.<\/p>\n<p>Such a decline in competitors or predators could be associated with climatic changes driven by the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.thinkquest.org\/3876\/iceage.html\">last ice age<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of population structure evident in <em>Architeuthis<\/em> suggests a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Panmixia\">panmictic<\/a> (randomly mating) global population has existed for a long time.
