Barron<\/a>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/pennsylvania-state-university-1258\">Pennsylvania State University<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s college students \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/work\/1410722\/here-is-exactly-what-gen-z-wants-according-to-all-of-the-surveys\/\">dubbed Generation Z<\/a> \u2013 are beginning to make their mark on the workplace with a distinctly unconventional and often irreverent approach to problem-solving. In my day-to-day interactions with our students, I find that this group doesn\u2019t only ask \u201cWhy?\u201d they ask \u201cHow can I fix that?\u201d And their curiosity, independence, energy and assertiveness are transforming the entrepreneurial space.<\/p>\n<p>These <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/deeppatel\/2017\/09\/21\/8-ways-generation-z-will-differ-from-millennials-in-the-workplace\/#1df48c6a76e5\">post-millennials<\/a> are less like the bumbling geeks from the cast of the HBO comedy \u201cSilicon Valley\u201d and more in the spirit of a focused problem-solver like a young MacGyver, who would rather invent and innovate as a means to learning and discovery.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s energizing to a university president like me is watching this transformation take place as more and more undergraduates are partnering with public institutions and fueling the next wave of ingenuity.<\/p>\n<h2>Entrepreneurship 101<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/150077\/students-entrepreneurial-energy-waiting-tapped.aspx\">A 2011 survey by Gallup<\/a> found 77 percent of students in grades 5 through 12 said they want to be their own boss and 45 percent planned to start their own business. Swisher connected with the university\u2019s startup incubator and vast alumni network, put in the work, and became a CEO of his own <a href=\"https:\/\/news.psu.edu\/story\/542712\/2018\/10\/19\/academics\/phospholutions-student-project-thriving-startup\">small business<\/a> before he walked across the stage at commencement in 2016. Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phospholutions.com\/about-us\/our-team\/\">his company<\/a> Phospholutions has five employees and counting and their treatment is being used on more than 50 golf courses in 10 states.<\/p>\n<p>Swisher is not alone in pursuing his entrepreneurial dreams while still in college. He is just one of many entrepreneurs starting their own companies by leveraging resources at their colleges and universities.<\/p>\n<p>Penn State, <a href=\"https:\/\/kelley.iu.edu\/faculty-research\/centers-institutes\/entrepreneurship-innovation\/index.cshtml\">Indiana University<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eship.unc.edu\/\">University of North Carolina<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scheller.gatech.edu\/centers-initiatives\/ile\/index.html\">Georgia Tech<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cfe.umich.edu\/\">University of Michigan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fisher.osu.edu\/centers-partnerships\/cie\">Ohio State<\/a> and other leading public institutions all have thriving entrepreneurial centers that are available to all students, as well as community members and businesses. <a href=\"https:\/\/invent.psu.edu\/\">Penn State alone has opened 21 entrepreneurial spaces across Pennsylvania<\/a>, and in just two years, we\u2019ve engaged with more than 4,500 students.<\/p>\n<p>Moving scientific discoveries into a breakthrough business opportunity is powering economic growth and creating jobs. Consider that nationally \u2013 in 2017 alone \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/autm.net\/AUTM\/media\/SurveyReportsPDF\/Survey%20Reports%20Images\/AUTM_2017_Infographic_1.pdf\">Association of University Technology Managers<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$68.2 billion in research expenditures<\/li>\n<li>1,080 startups formed<\/li>\n<li>24,998 invention disclosures<\/li>\n<li>15,335 new U.S. patent applications filed<\/li>\n<li>7,849 licenses and options executed<\/li>\n<li>755 new products created<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Undergraduate students at public universities are fueling this trend<\/h2>\n<p>Traditionally, higher education has focused their investment on faculty entrepreneurs, hoping to find a breakthrough like the next <a href=\"https:\/\/science.howstuffworks.com\/innovation\/everyday-innovations\/who-invented-sports-drinks1.htm\">Gatorade<\/a> (University of Florida) or <a href=\"https:\/\/dailynorthwestern.com\/2016\/04\/10\/in-focus\/in-focus-as-lyrica-profits-dry-up-northwestern-seeks-another-blockbuster-drug\/\">Lyrica<\/a> (Northwestern University). Since universities don\u2019t own the rights to undergraduate intellectual property, there has been less incentive to support these efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Until now.<\/p>\n<p>While we universities are taking a risk on students without a guaranteed immediate return on investment, we think the potential outcomes \u2013 for example in alumni support and building our local economies \u2013 are worth it.<\/p>\n<p>With their minds set on this entrepreneurial future, a common narrative has emerged that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kaytiezimmerman\/2017\/12\/17\/make-way-for-generation-z-entrepreneurs-saying-no-to-college\/#4050211547a6\">students are skipping college<\/a> to start their own businesses. In reality, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2014\/11\/18\/generation-z-survey\/#_ga=2.262291720.506741951.1509623977-1826976263.1509623977\">8 in 10 students<\/a> believe college is important to achieving their career goals. Sixty-three percent of those same students \u2013 all between the ages of 16 and 19 \u2013 said they want to learn about entrepreneurship in college, including how to start a business.<\/p>\n<p>Land-grant and public institutions are contributing the practical education that can contribute to economic growth and development. Indeed, generally speaking talent-driven innovation was identified as the most important factor by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/Deloitte\/us\/Documents\/manufacturing\/us-gmci-highlights.pdf\">Deloitte-U.S. Council on Competitiveness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Through skills training and engaged entrepreneurial experiences, students are realizing the profound impact they can have by solving a problem as well as overcoming obstacles, failures and flops \u2013 all under the umbrella of university guidance and resource support.<\/p>\n<h2>Innovation is inspiring and a wise investment<\/h2>\n<p>Research and education have always opened doors that benefit the nation we serve. Today, public colleges and universities are well-positioned to transform our economy and infuse it with innovation and energy. As chair of the Association of Public &amp; Land-grant Universities (APLU) newly formed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplu.org\/members\/commissions\/economic-and-community-engagement\/index.html\">Commission on Economic and Community Engagement (CECE)<\/a>, I\u2019m working with universities and our government partners to identify key areas crucial to maximizing the impact of public research universities.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of this year, tens of millions of Generation Zers will enter the workforce. The challenge for higher education will be how to help the world of business to better harness the many talents, energy and inquisitiveness that Generation Zers bring to the table.
