{"id":1513,"date":"2014-10-18T05:07:27","date_gmt":"2014-10-18T05:07:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/?p=1513"},"modified":"2016-09-13T21:57:35","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T21:57:35","slug":"why-the-poor-pay-1400-for-old-ipads-and-more-in-muckreads-weekly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/why-the-poor-pay-1400-for-old-ipads-and-more-in-muckreads-weekly\/","title":{"rendered":"Why The Poor Pay $1,400 for Old iPads and More in MuckReads Weekly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Terry Parris Jr ProPublica, Oct. 17, 2014, 2:10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our consumer economy is polluting this town, literally and politically.<\/strong> A $2.36 million bribe to a lowly city councilman in the Los Angeles exurb of Moreno Valley led to a story of how our consumer economy of &#8220;two-day shipping, click-to-ship, and get-it-on-your-doorstep-by-noon-tomorrow&#8221; comes with a price &#8220;paid by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/jessicagarrison\/how-our-shopping-harms-the-lungs-of-california-children#20uxxtn\">people who live in the shadows of the mega-warehouses<\/a>.&#8221; That price is &#8220;lung-stunting, cancer-causing pollution and, in some cases, political corruption.&#8221; <em>\u2014\u00a0BuzzFeed<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bad evidence and mistakes put an innocent 17-year-old in prison for 20 years.<\/strong> &#8220;We made some decisions that were bad decisions,&#8221; said Bill Hackathorn, one of Michelle Murphy&#8217;s defense attorneys. &#8220;I knew all along the most innocent person I ever represented got convicted because I wasn&#8217;t good enough.&#8221; The Tulsa World&#8217;s two-part series examines <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tulsaworld.com\/newshomepage1\/shadow-of-doubt-records-show-mistakes-questionable-evidence-in-woman\/article_8be38089-bd87-53e0-8392-40c6d287bf09.html\">Oklahoma&#8217;s flawed prosecution of Murphy<\/a> for the murder of her child.<em>\u2014\u00a0Tulsa World via @<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/caryaspinwall\">caryaspinwall<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>If the inmate doesn&#8217;t die in prison, it doesn&#8217;t show up on prison rolls. <\/strong>In Orleans Parish Prison, seven inmates have died shortly after being released from custody, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/crime\/index.ssf\/2014\/10\/deaths_go_uncounted_at_orleans.html\">an intentional circumvention of the public reporting requirements<\/a> for in-custody deaths,&#8221; according to critics. Some of those deaths were classified as &#8220;natural causes,&#8221; but there is a deeper story here. Natural causes don&#8217;t mean the deaths weren&#8217;t preventable, which is &#8220;why thorough reviews after deaths are critical to determine whether the root cause of the death was something fixable, like improving CPR response times or changing medicine administration policies.&#8221; <em>\u2014\u00a0The Times-Picayune via @<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NaomiMartin\">NaomiMartin<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Would you pay $1,439.28 for an early model iPad? Some who can&#8217;t afford it do. <\/strong>In some ways, the predatory lending to the poor that threw America into a tailspin in 2006 has moved on to smaller items like iPads and couches. Rent-to-own stores can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/storyline\/wp\/2014\/10\/16\/she-bought-a-sofa-on-installment-payments-now-its-straining-her-life\/?tid=HP_more\">charge effective interest rates of more than 100 percent<\/a> and avoid state usury laws by categorizing the purchases as &#8220;leases.&#8221; \u00a0And the industry is growing: the store that sells the $1,400 iPad (over 72 weeks) currently has 204 stores and wants to double that number in the next three years. \u00a0<em>\u2014\u00a0The Washington Post via @<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dabeard\">dabeard<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pyramid schemes are illegal but multilevel marketing companies aren&#8217;t.<\/strong> Herbalife is one of those MLMs. This company&#8217;s &#8220;nutrition-club system&#8221; recruits people to buy and then try and sell its flavored nutritional shakes.
