{"id":1754,"date":"2014-10-21T20:00:01","date_gmt":"2014-10-21T20:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/?p=1754"},"modified":"2016-09-01T00:43:44","modified_gmt":"2016-09-01T00:43:44","slug":"my-college-classroom-crusade-to-teach-marvel-to-undergrads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/my-college-classroom-crusade-to-teach-marvel-to-undergrads\/","title":{"rendered":"My college classroom crusade to teach Marvel to undergrads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/arnold-t-blumberg-139334\">Arnold T Blumberg<\/a><em>, University of Baltimore<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the fall of 2010, as The Walking Dead was about to debut on TV, I launched my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/09\/08\/AR2010090802944.html\">Media Genres: Zombies<\/a> course at the University of Baltimore and examined what that horror subgenre reflects about our culture. Much of the press coverage focused on the course\u2019s very existence. Why waste the time and money? Shouldn\u2019t you be teaching kids how to get a job?<\/p>\n<p>Four years later, the University of Baltimore has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubalt.edu\/news\/news-releases.cfm?id=2086\">announced<\/a> my spring 2015 Media Genres: Media Marvels class, which focuses on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is itself based on Marvel Comics\u2019 75-year-old interconnected saga, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/uproxx.com\/filmdrunk\/2014\/09\/a-maryland-university-will-offer-a-course-on-marvel-film-studies\/\">same questions<\/a> are popping up.<\/p>\n<p>So here I am again to explain why teaching critical thinking about mass media is vitally important to guarantee our students are not just capable of working but of functioning as literate, informed citizens.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"align-center zoomable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/62e528761d0685343e1c-f3d1b99a743ffa4142d9d7f1978d9686.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/files\/61308\/area14mp\/gn4my7bj-1412871894.jpeg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/62e528761d0685343e1c-f3d1b99a743ffa4142d9d7f1978d9686.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/files\/61308\/width668\/gn4my7bj-1412871894.jpeg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"caption\">It\u2019s always worth looking behind the scenes.<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"attribution\"><a class=\"source\" href=\"http:\/\/www.image.net\/xads\/actions\/layout\/preview.do?asset=235485543&amp;fromPage=search\" rel=\"nofollow\">Marvel 2015<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>My courses are about using familiar pop culture constructs to teach students how to think critically, analyze the messages shared via entertainment, and discuss race, gender, class, ethics, and morality in a way that reaches them where they live.<\/p>\n<p>While many classes use a dusty literary canon that offers less relevant connections for present-day students, my courses use zombies and superheroes \u2013 the common cultural currency we\u2019re reading and viewing in the here and now \u2013 as a spur for thoughtful conversation. Academic texts don\u2019t have to be old to be important and useful; the reverse is truer now than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>We exist in a world where we are inundated by media messages. They can change how you think, who you vote for, how you make choices in a thousand indefinable ways. If you\u2019re aware of these messages and understand how to decode them, you have the tools to make it through this media-saturated life with awareness and, eventually, wisdom. Education isn\u2019t always about training you to get a job; it\u2019s about preparing for a lifetime in a world filled with agendas and people motivated to make up your mind for you.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"align-center zoomable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/62e528761d0685343e1c-f3d1b99a743ffa4142d9d7f1978d9686.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/files\/61302\/area14mp\/s9zzbwvf-1412871168.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/62e528761d0685343e1c-f3d1b99a743ffa4142d9d7f1978d9686.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/files\/61302\/width668\/s9zzbwvf-1412871168.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"caption\">You\u2019ll get more out of watching Thor onscreen than you will out of reading Beowulf.<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"attribution\"><span class=\"source\">Marvel 2015<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/marvel.com\/movies\/movie\/181\/captain_america_the_winter_soldier\">Captain America: The Winter Soldier<\/a>, released earlier this year, is a good example of how well the Marvel movies lend themselves to productive analysis; it\u2019s also a film Marvel and parent company Disney had no need to make. Given the good will generated by the previous films, and the built-in audience eager to see every new chapter, all they had to do was deliver a well-made, rousing adventure with our shield-slinging hero.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, this ode to 70s conspiracy films \u2013 featuring that era\u2019s most notable actor, Robert Redford, in a profound inversion of his usual role \u2013 upends much of the series\u2019 structure, sets narrative obstacles for any successive films, and incorporates pointed political commentary on everything from NSA surveillance to drone strikes.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s just one movie; we\u2019ll be looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/marvel.com\/movies\/all\">eleven of them<\/a> and examining their comic book, cinematic, and literary predecessors as well as supplementary material from the likes of mythologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jcf.org\/new\/index.php?categoryid=11\">Joseph Campbell<\/a> and neurologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oliversacks.com\/\">Oliver Sacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"align-center zoomable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/62e528761d0685343e1c-f3d1b99a743ffa4142d9d7f1978d9686.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/files\/61293\/area14mp\/8w89x2cr-1412868127.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/62e528761d0685343e1c-f3d1b99a743ffa4142d9d7f1978d9686.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/files\/61293\/width668\/8w89x2cr-1412868127.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"caption\">Now let\u2019s turn to the semantics of \u2018I am Groot\u2019 \u2026<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"attribution\"><a class=\"source\" href=\"http:\/\/www.image.net\/xads\/actions\/layout\/preview.do?asset=222464427&amp;fromPage=search\" rel=\"nofollow\">Marvel 2014<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>None of this is really new. While my course is being called the \u201cfirst of its kind\u201d by specifically focusing on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the academic exploration of comics and superheroes has been going on for decades. Every time it\u2019s reported \u2013 usually with the same patronizing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/09\/24\/us-usa-education-comics-idUSKCN0HJ2AW20140924\">BAM POW ZAP headlines<\/a> \u2013 it\u2019s as though this never happened before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow you can take a college course in comics!\u201d Yes, and you could also take one 15 years ago when I first started teaching comic book literature over at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. You could also encounter Marvel heroes in universities decades ago when Marvel editor and writer Stan Lee himself took to the <a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/5952658\/the-true-story-of-life-at-marvel-comics-in-the-glory-days-of-jack-kirby-and-stan-lee\">college lecture circuit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps another compelling argument for teaching critical thinking is that it might be a good idea to train the next generation to have a cultural memory that lasts more than five years.<\/p>\n<p>While I knew certain news organizations would report the Marvel course with bemusement or derision, I was shocked to see some pop culture publications <a href=\"\/\/io9.com\/univ-baltimore-is-offering-a-class-on-the-marvel-cinem-1638776987\">including io9.com<\/a> dismissing and even insulting the notion.<\/p>\n<p>Fans often feel ownership of something when it remains within their purview, but as these characters became global icons \u2013 the very reason we need to examine them \u2013 they passed out of the hands of comic book fans exclusively and now belong to everyone. I can only say that as equal parts educator and enthusiast myself, I approach the Marvel material with the same passion I had for it as a child when I read Stan Lee\u2019s hyperbolic captions and dialogue as Spider-Man struggled to save the day once again.<\/p>\n<p>Comics are excellent gateways to literacy; they can introduce children to the joy of reading as well as providing early lessons in heroism, morality, and ethics. Superheroes are there to save the day in fiction and reality. It\u2019s time to carry that effort forward, and I\u2019m very proud to be part of it. I teach media and critical thinking because I see it not just as a job but also as a responsibility. And as all Marvel fans know, with great power \u2026 you\u2019re ahead of me, aren\u2019t you? \u2019Nuff said.
