{"id":19595,"date":"2020-02-09T23:12:36","date_gmt":"2020-02-09T23:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/?p=19595"},"modified":"2020-02-11T15:31:45","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T15:31:45","slug":"the-meme-endorsement-you-might-have-missed-and-why-it-matters-for-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/the-meme-endorsement-you-might-have-missed-and-why-it-matters-for-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"The meme endorsement you might have missed \u2013 and why it matters for 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/heather-woods-448246\">Heather Woods<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/kansas-state-university-1150\">Kansas State University<\/a><\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/leslie-hahner-586382\">Leslie Hahner<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/baylor-university-1084\">Baylor University<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 19, the New York Times editorial board made history when it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/01\/19\/opinion\/amy-klobuchar-elizabeth-warren-nytimes-endorsement.html\">endorsed two candidates<\/a>, Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar, for president, concluding, \u201cMay the best woman win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This came on the heels on another key endorsement, one that got far less media coverage: On Jan. 15, New Urbanist Memes for Transit-Oriented Teens, a private Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/whatwouldjanejacobsdo\/\">meme group<\/a>, endorsed U.S. presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.<\/p>\n<p>Within hours, Bernie <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drooliet\/status\/1217871003021389824\">personally thanked<\/a> the group\u2019s nearly 180,000 \u201cNUMTOTs,\u201d as they affectionately call themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Why would a leading contender for the Democratic nomination so eagerly patronize a niche group on a social media site?<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, it\u2019s simply smart politics \u2013 and a sign of how campaigning and political messaging strategies are rapidly changing. They\u2019ve become an increasingly important \u2013 even indispensable \u2013 communication tool in politics, helping <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=SPwlDQAAQBAJ\">ordinary voters<\/a> shape political debates and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.org\/10.1080\/00028533.2013.11821790\">hone arguments<\/a> from their phones.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a radical departure from just a decade ago, when donors and legacy media outlets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.org\/10.5325\/jinfopoli.6.2016.0129\">largely set the tone<\/a>, defined the parameters and dictated the topics of debate.<\/p>\n<p>With social media now a battleground for political debate, memes have become a key way for regular supporters of a candidate or party to unite around certain issues, generate talking points and crystallize policy platforms \u2013 regardless of what The New York Times, Fox News or The Washington Post has to say about it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/732590680233889\/?sorting_setting=CHRONOLOGICAL\">New Urbanist Memes for Transit-Oriented Teens<\/a> is a large, diverse meme group on Facebook. In the past few days, NUMTOTs have debated renters\u2019 rights, fair housing policies, flood management for densely populated areas, public transit, income inequality and shelters for LGBTQ+ youth.<\/p>\n<p>But with the 2020 presidential race well underway, the group has also been discussing the candidates and their policies.<\/p>\n<p>The page has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2018\/jul\/05\/meet-the-numtots-the-millennials-who-find-fixing-public-transit-sexy-urbanist-memes\">outsized ability<\/a> \u2013 on Facebook, at least \u2013 to communicate members\u2019 political positions. That may not have been the Trump campaign\u2019s plan, but there\u2019s no doubt that these memes funneled attention in Trump\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Trump \u2013 perhaps intuitively understanding their power \u2013 retweeted some of these viral memes, even though the meme\u2019s creators had little or no connection to his official campaign.<\/p>\n<div data-react-class=\"Tweet\" data-react-props=\"{&quot;tweetId&quot;:&quot;653856168402681856&quot;}\"><\/div>\n<p>Four years later, the politics of memes have evolved. NUMTOT\u2019s endorsement actually represents an organized political decision that, in turn, has been acknowledged and celebrated by a candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Not only can memes seed talking points to campaigns, but they also give candidates a window into the issues that are important to subsets of voters.
