{"id":19648,"date":"2020-02-14T23:47:23","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T23:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/?p=19648"},"modified":"2020-02-15T02:56:56","modified_gmt":"2020-02-15T02:56:56","slug":"transgender-americans-are-more-likely-to-be-unemployed-and-poor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/transgender-americans-are-more-likely-to-be-unemployed-and-poor\/","title":{"rendered":"Transgender Americans are more likely to be unemployed and poor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/christopher-carpenter-892367\">Christopher Carpenter<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/vanderbilt-university-1293\">Vanderbilt University<\/a><\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/gilbert-gonzales-927114\">Gilbert Gonzales<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/vanderbilt-university-1293\">Vanderbilt University<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The United States Supreme Court will issue a ruling this year in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/case-files\/cases\/r-g-g-r-harris-funeral-homes-inc-v-equal-opportunity-employment-commission\/\">a landmark case<\/a> that will determine whether transgender people \u2013 individuals whose sex assigned at birth does not match their current innate sense of being male, female, both or neither \u2013 are protected by federal law from employment discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>At stake is whether transgender individuals can reasonably earn a living without fear of losing their jobs simply because they are transgender.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1177\/0019793920902776\">Our new study<\/a>, published on Feb. 11, suggests that such protections are sorely needed. On nearly all measures of economic and social well-being, transgender people do much worse.<\/p>\n<h2>Little is known about transgender people<\/h2>\n<p>We are scholars of <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=80vVFBUAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\">economics<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=xYqTZcsAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\">health<\/a> and LGBT populations who wanted to find out about how transgender people fare economically.<\/p>\n<p>A growing body of research on sexual minorities has steadily advanced over the past 25 years. However, when we first started working on this research project three years ago, we found little published work on the economic lives of transgender people.<\/p>\n<p>Most research that did exist came only from studies of one or two progressive-leaning states, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/demographics\/health-trans-adults-ca\/\">California<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3490554\/pdf\/AJPH.2011.300315.pdf\">Massachusetts<\/a>, or used \u201cconvenience\u201d or \u201csnowball\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/transequality.org\/issues\/us-trans-survey\">samples<\/a> of transgender people where participants are recruited through social networks.<\/p>\n<p>These types of data are useful, but they might not accurately reflect the general transgender population in the United States.<\/p>\n<h2>What we found<\/h2>\n<p>This is where our study came in.<\/p>\n<p>We used data from an annual telephone survey of over 400,000 individuals in the United States that asks people about their employment, income, health insurance coverage and overall health. It\u2019s called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/brfss\/index.html\">Center for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in 2014, this survey gave states the option to ask respondents their sexual orientation and gender identity. When asked \u201cAre you transgender?\u201d over 2,100 adults responded \u201cyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although this is only a fraction of 1% of the total survey sample, this is a much larger sample of transgender people than has been used in other survey-based studies. And, importantly, it allowed us to examine transgender individuals from states as diverse as Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Idaho and Florida.<\/p>\n<p>The most consistent pattern we found is that individuals who described themselves as transgender did much worse in aspects of their lives that affect their economic well-being \u2013 like educational attainment, employment and poverty status \u2013 than otherwise comparable individuals who did not identify as transgender.<\/p>\n<p>This was especially true for employment. Transgender people were 11 percentage points less likely to be working compared to nontransgender, or cisgender, people.<\/p>\n<p>We found that this effect was driven by two forces: Transgender people were more likely to be unemployed \u2013 that is, they would like to work but are not currently working \u2013 and much more likely to report that they are unable to work.<\/p>\n<p>We speculate that transgender people may be unable to work due to a disability, poor health, lack of transportation or other structural barriers.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also possible that transgender people have been turned away so many times by potential employers \u2013 possibly due to discrimination \u2013 that they are what economists aptly refer to as <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/forget-lower-jobs-growth-the-number-of-people-whove-stopped-looking-for-work-is-much-more-worrisome-118445\">\u201cdiscouraged,\u201d<\/a> and thus they report that they are \u201cunable to (find) work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our results also showed that transgender people had much lower rates of college education than nontransgender people. While 28% of nontransgender people in the survey said they had a college education, the same was true for only 14% of transgender respondents.<\/p>\n<p>Even after accounting for lower college education rates, we found that transgender people had higher rates of poverty and worse health than otherwise comparable individuals who did not identify as transgender.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"moU0M\" class=\"tc-infographic-datawrapper\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/moU0M\/2\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400px\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Rapidly changing policy<\/h2>\n<p>The landmark ruling in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/14pdf\/14-556_3204.pdf\">Obergefell v. Hodges<\/a> in June 2015 extended same-sex marriage throughout the United States. Since then, a phrase has emerged to describe the incomplete protection against employment discrimination afforded LBGT people: sexual minorities in most states can be \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/state-of-lgbt-rights-married-on-sunday-but-fired-on-monday\">married on Sunday and fired on Monday<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is because there is currently no explicit federal employment protection barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Instead, sexual minorities must rely on a patchwork of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtmap.org\/equality-maps\/non_discrimination_laws\">state laws<\/a>. Currently, 26 states have no explicit nondiscrimination protections for sexual minorities.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 24 states with explicit nondiscrimination protections for sexual minorities, nearly all also protect transgender people. One state \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wisconsin.pdf\">Wisconsin<\/a> \u2013 explicitly prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation but not on the basis of gender identity.<\/p>\n<p>The state patchwork of legal protections for sexual and gender minorities has led to the case currently pending in the Supreme Court, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/oral_arguments\/argument_transcripts\/2019\/18-107_c18e.pdf\">RG &amp; GR Funeral Homes v. EEOC<\/a>. In this case, Aimee Stephens, a transgender woman, was fired from her job at a funeral home after her transition.<\/p>\n<p>If the Supreme Court rules in favor of RG &amp; GR Funeral Homes, transgender Americans could be fired based on their transgender status in any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtmap.org\/equality-maps\/non_discrimination_laws\">state that currently lacks employment protections for transgender people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our research demonstrates that stark economic inequalities already exist for this unprotected group of Americans.<\/p>\n<p>[ <em>You\u2019re smart and curious about the world.
