Amid unprecedented <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2020\/04\/1061322\">global job losses<\/a>, concerns about <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2020\/04\/1061322\">transport infrastructure<\/a> and the continuing need for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/social-distancing-office-cubicles\">workplace social distancing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-52525127\">governments<\/a> are launching back-to-work plans.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the latest US research reveals that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2020-04-03-gartner-cfo-surey-reveals-74-percent-of-organizations-to-shift-some-employees-to-remote-work-permanently2\">74% of businesses want some workers to permanently work remotely<\/a> and business leaders are actively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1b304300-0756-4774-9263-c97958e0054d\">shedding leased office space<\/a> \u2013 hinting that not everyone will go back to the office.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five key trends that will shape the future of how we work.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Commuting will change forever<\/h2>\n<p>We might miss the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/remote-working-the-new-normal-for-many-but-it-comes-with-hidden-risks-new-research-133989\">social interaction of the office<\/a>, but most don\u2019t miss commuting. This was one of the key findings in my <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/epdf\/10.1007\/s40558-020-00172-4?author_access_token=rjb0qXQInj3geI-VmiYV5ve4RwlQNchNByi7wbcMAY56qNt0Yt2e-NHd-Cku5uLBJSN9_GEjW0HydYCDtgJALqdMhDkzwHQ5L7MDzYsNnFTJfqkQJRWrJCvDlDc7PbG8Ob3oePXCFBDVekqESbTkbg%3D%3D\">four-year remote work study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before lockdown, US commute times reached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2019\/10\/07\/nine-days-road-average-commute-time-reached-new-record-last-year\/\">record levels<\/a> and most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.totaljobs.com\/insidejob\/uk-workers-will-spend-over-a-year-of-their-lives-commuting\/\">UK workers<\/a> spent more than a year of their lives travelling to and from work. Many will need to work from home for weeks or months to come. The situation is fluid, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-52525127\">governments<\/a> are drawing up plans for workers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekoapp.com\/blog\/the-future-of-remote-work-after-covid-19-3-common-predictions\">to stagger working times<\/a>, so public transport is not overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p>The genie is out of the bottle, and commuting is not going back to how it was.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Bad email etiquette won\u2019t be tolerated<\/h2>\n<p>Workplace communication is rapidly transforming and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eworklife.co.uk\/email-and-other-communications\/\">email is a case in point<\/a>. More than ever, creating a clear separation between <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/content\/pdf\/10.1007\/s40558-020-00172-4.pdf\">work and leisure time is vital<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Research repeatedly shows that sending out-of-hours emails is not only <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/ten-rules-of-email-that-will-reduce-your-stress-levels-113670\">bad etiquette<\/a> \u2013 but creates a coercive work culture that requires people to be available 24\/7. Social scientists argue this turns us into <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/0893318918811080\">worker\/smartphone hybrids<\/a> and causes <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/ten-rules-of-email-that-will-reduce-your-stress-levels-113670\">stress and burnout<\/a>. Expecting quick answers to email is increasingly seen as bullying.<\/p>\n<p>Many now realise that colleagues might need to work flexibly due to caring responsibilities. Lockdown has encouraged a new acceptance of flexibility. But this shouldn\u2019t extend to having a culture that expects people to be available all the time.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Video calls will be limited<\/h2>\n<p>Zoom calls will remain part of our lives \u2013 but we will change and adapt how we use them. More co-working spaces will emerge<\/h2>\n<p>Workers forced to continue working from cramped living spaces are desperate for alternatives. When lockdown lifts they will turn to the cafes and co-working spaces that are <a href=\"https:\/\/sifted.eu\/articles\/coworking-spaces-coronavirus\/\">still in business<\/a>. Before COVID-19 hit, co-working spaces were projected to increase more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coworkingresources.org\/blog\/key-figures-coworking-growth\">40% worldwide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The paradox of remote working is that people crave the flexibility but know that being around others boosts productivity. My research shows that over time remote workers <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/epdf\/10.1007\/s40558-020-00172-4?author_access_token=rjb0qXQInj3geI-VmiYV5ve4RwlQNchNByi7wbcMAY56qNt0Yt2e-NHd-Cku5uLBJSN9_GEjW0HydYCDtgJALqdMhDkzwHQ5L7MDzYsNnFTJfqkQJRWrJCvDlDc7PbG8Ob3oePXCFBDVekqESbTkbg%3D%3D\">crave the physical closeness<\/a> that comes with just being alongside other people. Independent co-working spaces in some areas were thriving before COVID-19 &#8211; they may become more mainstream if they survive lockdown.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Could we become part-time digital nomads?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/digital-nomads-what-its-really-like-to-work-while-travelling-the-world-99345\">Digital nomads<\/a> are extreme remote workers that post Instagram stories from exotic locations. Right now, that lifestyle seems unrelatable, impossible and to many unethical.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, many decently paid workers in New York, London and Paris are stuck in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/how-covid-19-might-change-the-way-we-live-and-work-for-good\">uncomfortably small flats<\/a>, dreaming of escape from lockdown. As a housing manager recently confided to me: \u201cLondon living without nightlife and culture, isn\u2019t fun. Everyone wants to escape to somewhere outdoorsy when allowed. I\u2019m not sure I approve but it\u2019s understandable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For now, remote working from different locations is not allowed. But the allure of relocating to a picturesque location remains \u2013 and Brian Chesky, CEO of AirBnB, is banking on it. He sees COVID-19 as a business opportunity and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2020-04-22\/airbnb-s-future-depends-on-a-post-pandemic-travel-boom\">told Bloomberg<\/a>: \u201cPeople are realising they can work remote \u2026 that\u2019s a huge opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not all will agree \u2013 it could cause <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/overtourism-a-growing-global-problem-100029\">long-term sustainability issues<\/a> \u2013 and many will not <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/coronavirus-puts-class-dimension-of-mobility-into-sharp-focus-135896\">have this privilege<\/a>. But when lockdown fully lifts, who\u2019s to say more people will not work remotely from different parts of the world, beyond their living rooms.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
