Instead, many are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/section\/multimedia\/map-covid-19-schools-open-closed.html\">staying at home<\/a> and attending virtual classes indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crpe.org\/sites\/default\/files\/getting_back_to_school_brief.pdf\">the Center on Reinventing Public Education<\/a>, a nonpartisan research center, about 25% of U.S. school districts have started the year fully remote. This means that children will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/bs-ed-op-0601-ethics-reopen-schools-20200601-n26yyqm6xrbzfk5fwhxtqky27m-story.html\">miss out on vital opportunities<\/a> for educational, social and emotional development. And, as is familiar during this pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/racial-economic-inequality-amid-the-covid-19-crisis\/\">the impact will be unequal<\/a>: Children in underresourced districts are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crpe.org\/sites\/default\/files\/getting_back_to_school_brief.pdf\">more likely to be remote learners<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/09\/11\/magazine\/covid-school-reopenings.html\">These children are<\/a> hardest hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/blogs\/stateline\/2020\/07\/29\/virtual-learning-means-unequal-learning\">by school closures<\/a> as they are more likely to lack access to necessary technologies and are less likely to receive parental help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2020\/09\/17\/fighting-for-fairness-amid-a-pandemic.html\">with their learning<\/a>. They will also lose out on easy access <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMp2005638\">to school meals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s another harm done by school closures: a child\u2019s ability to be physically active. <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=JQiCnEIAAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;oi=ao\">We are researchers<\/a> at Johns Hopkins University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhsph.edu\/faculty\/directory\/profile\/1814\/keshia-pollack-porter\">studying physical activity<\/a> and its impact on public health. They aren\u2019t walking to school or to a bus stop. Generally, they can\u2019t participate in school teams or clubs that promote physical activity either (although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2020\/08\/20\/should-schools-suspend-sports-the-debate-is.html\">in some school districts<\/a>, team sports may go ahead even while in-person education does not).<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, children have traditionally been <a href=\"https:\/\/activelivingresearch.org\/does-summertime-weight-gain-undermine-youth-obesity-prevention-efforts\">less physically active in the summer<\/a> than during the school year, with notable differences by race and ethnicity. And given the punishing trajectory of the pandemic, it is not clear when those prospects for physical activity will be available again.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/paguidelines\/second-edition\/pdf\/Physical_Activity_Guidelines_2nd_edition.pdf\">The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/a> recommends that children between ages 6 and 17 engage in one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day. That can improve a child\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/dietphysicalactivity\/factsheet_young_people\/en\/\">physical and mental health<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/resources\/infographic\/physical-activity.htm\">prevent the onset<\/a> of chronic disease, including Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Physical activity and active play can also be a source of joy for children. As they socialize with peers, they find pleasure in moving their bodies and developing their strength and <a href=\"https:\/\/humankinetics.me\/2018\/06\/27\/what-is-physical-literacy\/#:%7E:text=Physical%20literacy%20is%20the%20development,particular%20situations%20and%20reacting%20appropriately.\">physical literacy<\/a>. Many of us look back fondly on childhood memories of soccer games and running around until we tire ourselves out, a delight every child deserves.<\/p>\n<p>Schools, of course, are not perfect when it comes to meeting children\u2019s physical activity needs. Physical education is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2019\/01\/31\/fitness-industry-is-booming-so-why-are-pe-classes-disappearing\/\">chronically underfunded<\/a>, and Black and Latino children typically <a href=\"https:\/\/pha.berkeley.edu\/2019\/12\/01\/whats-wrong-with-physical-education\/\">lose out the most<\/a>. It\u2019s also a matter of fairness.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the pandemic, children from low-income communities and communities of color already experienced greater challenges in accessing physical activity opportunities. They were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0140673612607351?casa_token=HetDwLRzLtoAAAAA:8l6szPdGkkljNOTOoeKCdP7rMzmvw9p_NpJnUJubgWRLQOM-oV-Sp-yO4dlVCjzaue-eQXPa\">already less likely<\/a> to meet physical activity recommendations because of a lack of affordable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/espn\/story\/_\/id\/27356477\/kids-playing-enough-sports-culprit-cost\">options<\/a>. There are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pcd\/issues\/2017\/17_0111.htm\">safety issues<\/a>, challenges to parental <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pcd\/issues\/2017\/17_0111.htm\">support<\/a> and a neighborhood environment that doesn\u2019t foster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pcd\/issues\/2016\/15_0406.htm\">play and physical activity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As more activities have moved outdoors to decrease the risk of virus spread, these inequities are felt more than ever before. In many cases, the parents of children in low-income communities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2020\/09\/limited-child-care-options-essential-workers\/615931\/\">are essential workers<\/a> who can\u2019t be home to support either learning or physical activity. Private backyards for play are frequently missing, and public spaces are often inadequate.<\/p>\n<p>The weather poses additional barriers. Because of less green space and tree canopy, low-income neighborhoods <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/09\/03\/754044732\/as-rising-heat-bakes-u-s-cities-the-poor-often-feel-it-most\">tend to be hotter<\/a> in the summer, sometimes significantly so, than higher-income neighborhoods in the same city. They also have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/pollution-poverty-people-color-asthma-inner-city\/\">poorer air quality<\/a>. In the winter, many families can\u2019t afford a warm coat, which makes outdoor play more difficult.<\/p>\n<h2>Promoting outdoor play<\/h2>\n<p>These are not intractable problems. Solutions exist to promote a child\u2019s active outdoor play. Some strategies work in all settings, although urban, suburban and rural environments will have to vary approaches. But in all cases, it\u2019s essential that children have the clothing and nourishment they need to play outside through all types of weather.<\/p>\n<p>First, supervised play can take place on unused school yards through policies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.changelabsolutions.org\/product\/what-joint-use-agreement\">joint use agreements<\/a>. They have closed down entire streets and driving lanes and replaced them with activity areas. These efforts can be expanded to focus on children by creating specialized spaces for child-friendly games. This was already happening before the pandemic: Initiatives such as <a href=\"https:\/\/stacks.cdc.gov\/view\/cdc\/78633\">Play Streets<\/a>, where neighborhood blocks are shut down to promote play, were becoming popular. This can be a model, albeit with additional safeguards built in to promote physical distancing.<\/p>\n<p>The pandemic has created previously unimaginable challenges for so many of us. Children\u2019s health and well-being, particularly for those facing significant barriers, must be a priority.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
