Under Secretary of State Krach tells grads, \u201cThe world needs more trusted transformational leaders than ever before,\u201d in inspiring commencement address. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

At Purdue University\u2019s <\/span>commencement ceremonies<\/span><\/a> on Dec. 18, former Under Secretary of State Keith Krach and Life & News\u2019 \u201c<\/span>2018 Transformational Leader of the Year<\/span><\/a>\u201d told grads <\/span>the world needs more <\/span><\/b>trusted<\/span><\/b> transformational leaders than ever before<\/span><\/b> in an inspiring commencement address to the graduates of his alma mater.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Joyful Homecoming<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

For the former <\/span>International President<\/span><\/a> of the <\/span>Sigma Chi Fraternity<\/span><\/a>, it was a joyful homecoming. Ever since graduating with a degree in Engineering in 1979 on a <\/span>General Motors scholarship<\/span><\/a>, Krach has been actively engaged with the university, which he described to graduates as their \u201cforever friend<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He<\/span> served<\/span> as<\/span> Chairman<\/span> of<\/span> Purdue\u2019s<\/span> Board<\/span> of<\/span> Trustees<\/span> from<\/span> 2007-2013<\/span> where<\/span> he<\/span> <\/span>recruited<\/span><\/span><\/a> the<\/span> sitting<\/span> Governor<\/span> of<\/span> Indiana<\/span>,<\/span> Mitch<\/span> Daniels<\/span>,<\/span> to<\/span> become<\/span> Purdue\u2019s<\/span> 12<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> President<\/span>.<\/span> I<\/span>n<\/span> 2014,<\/span> the<\/span> <\/span>Krach<\/span> Leadership<\/span> Center<\/span><\/span><\/a> opened<\/span> and<\/span> was<\/span> <\/span>named<\/span> in<\/span> his<\/span> honor<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> After<\/span> Krach<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> service<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> country<\/span> he<\/span> co-founded<\/span> Purdue\u2019s<\/span> <\/span>Center<\/span> for<\/span> Tech<\/span> Diplomacy<\/span><\/span><\/a> in<\/span> the<\/span> fall<\/span> of<\/span> 2021<\/span> with<\/span> Engineering<\/span> Dean<\/span> <\/span>Mung<\/span> Chiang,<\/span><\/span><\/a> who<\/span> he<\/span> recruited<\/span> to<\/span> be<\/span> his<\/span> Science<\/span> and<\/span> Technology<\/span> Adviser<\/span> for<\/span> the<\/span> US<\/span> Department<\/span> of<\/span> State<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

President Daniels\u2019 introduction spotlighted the impact <\/span>of Krach\u2019s multi-sector transformational leadership. According to Daniels, \u201cKeith\u2019s career is a story of one giant leap after another focused on creating value and improving the ways in which we all live and work.\u201d Daniels said Krach is, \u201cAn American businessman, a Silicon Valley <\/span>innovator<\/span><\/a>, a <\/span>philanthropist<\/span><\/a>, and a <\/span>public servant<\/span><\/a> noted for bringing <\/span>transformational leadership<\/span><\/a> in realm after realm\u2014robotics, engineering, commerce, education, philanthropy, government and even the way people sign documents.\u201d Daniels noted that, \u201cOn top of all these accomplishments, including having the rare distinction of being <\/span>unanimously confirmed<\/span><\/a> by the U.S. Senate, he\u2019s remained dedicated to <\/span>giving back generously<\/span><\/a>, founding and leading several <\/span>foundations<\/span><\/a> and other <\/span>philanthropic organizations<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Purdue your \u201cForever Friend\u201d<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

As Krach began his address, he noted that, \u201cWhile I\u2019ve had a long career since I left Purdue, it feels like I was just sitting exactly where you are now, wondering what my future would be like. I also remember how excited and blessed I felt. My family, like so many of yours, had sacrificed a great deal for me to come here. However, since then, that blessed feeling has grown ten-fold. I can tell you after four decades of being an alum: Purdue is <\/span>your <\/span>forever friend<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Krach thought that Kahlil Gibran summed up that Purdue friendship best: <\/span>\u201cWhen you part from your friend, you grieve not; for that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.\u201d <\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

Krach said, \u201cAs an undergrad, this mountain climber learned a lot of lessons here at Purdue. Let me share the most significant one. I didn\u2019t realize it at the time, but I now see it with tremendous clarity from the plain. It\u2019s about two words: Transformation, and Trust.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Proof of the \u201cT<\/span><\/b>2\u201d<\/sup><\/span><\/b> Equation<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

Being an engineer, Krach couldn\u2019t resist turning it into a single equation for the grads: <\/span>Transformation to the power of Trust or simply T<\/span><\/b>2<\/sup><\/span><\/b>, which he reverently calls \u201cthe Purdue Equation.\u201d This highly educated crowd knew that any mathematical equation can be shown to be true by using a thing called a proof. So Krach shared his <\/span>personal proof<\/span><\/a> for the T<\/span>2<\/span> equation.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

He began with Transformation. \u201cTransformation is the <\/span>most powerful word in any language<\/span><\/a>,\u201d Krach argued, \u201cbecause without it we don\u2019t develop, prosper, or grow.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Krach recalled working as a <\/span>welder at the age of 12<\/span><\/a> in his dad\u2019s 5-person machine shop. In good times, his father employed five workers\u2014in tough times, he was his only employee. His <\/span>father<\/span><\/a> encouraged him to get some <\/span>\u201ccollege knowledge,\u201d<\/span><\/a> and come back as an engineer to help him grow the business into a \u201cbig company\u201d of 10 employees. Krach confessed that while he did become an engineer, he never went back to work with his dad. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

He said, \u201cBut my <\/span>dad was proud I was a Boilermaker<\/span><\/a> and loved the fact that it was also the name of his favorite after-work adult beverage.\u201d After the grads finished laughing, Krach acted as if he was toasting his father with his dad\u2019s favorite after-work adult beverage, a Boilermaker. \u201cHere\u2019s to you pops!\u201d he said.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Jumping in Water Over Your Head<\/span><\/b> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

For Krach, attending Purdue was \u201cjumping in water over my head.\u201d He was terrified he would never make it as an engineer. He recalled feeling outgunned because he never took \u201cthose fancy high school classes\u201d that his classmates had taken. According to Krach, \u201cit took all the courage I could muster to challenge my status quo.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

He urged the graduates to \u201c<\/span>jump in water over your head<\/span><\/a>,\u201d and trust themselves to survive, thrive, and grow. This is the key to <\/span>personal transformation<\/span><\/a>, Krach said. Jumping in the deep waters of Purdue, \u201cwas a great lesson in transformation and trusting myself,\u201d Krach said. \u201cI have <\/span>Purdue to thank<\/span><\/a> for that little voice in my head that tells me to go for it, and I\u2019ve been doing it non-stop my whole life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Krach pointed out that his life\u2019s <\/span>transformational journey<\/span><\/a> has been at high velocity with <\/span>plenty of adversity.<\/span><\/a> He admitted that \u201cliving on the edge\u201d of his capabilities gave him many opportunities to fail, but these have always been the times when he learned the most. Each new chapter builds on the last one and involves the risk of jumping in water over your head. Krach said, \u201cAfter a while, that adrenaline rush becomes <\/span>so addicting<\/span><\/a>, that I can\u2019t imagine living without it. I call it <\/span>scary fun<\/span><\/i><\/a>.<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Krach then tipped his hat to Purdue\u2019s President, quoting Daniels\u2019 commencement address from the previous year: <\/span>\u201cthe biggest risk of all is that we stop taking risks at all.\u201d<\/span><\/i> Then he said, \u201cAnd that\u2019s why the Wall Street Journal calls Mitch Daniels <\/span>the most innovative university president in America!<\/span><\/a>\u201d <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Krach explained that his willingness to engage in constant personal transformation empowered him to spearhead the creation of numerous game-changing companies that created entirely new categories in multiple industries. Krach asserted, \u201cIf your company isn\u2019t transforming, it\u2019s dying\u2014and the <\/span>best way to control the future is to invent it<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

High Performance Teams<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

Krach\u2019s life\u2019s work has been focused on creating innovative companies, and he believes <\/span>diversity of thought<\/span><\/a> is the catalyst for genius\u2014the <\/span>secret sauce<\/span><\/a> for building <\/span>high-performance teams<\/span><\/a>. He has used this approach\u2014distilled into a \u201cBusiness Playbook\u201d\u2014to drive a repeatable pattern of success in organization after organization.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

When Harvard Business School named Krach their 2019 <\/span>Business Leader of the Year<\/span><\/a>, former faculty HBS chair and Purdue Alum Bruce Harreld observed, \u201cAll four of Krach\u2019s companies are considered disruptors that transformed industries and generated significant shareholder value by becoming the clear market leaders through category creation.\u201d <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Essential Ingredient: Trust<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

Krach declared the essential ingredient to building such companies with high-performance teams is <\/span>Trust<\/span><\/a>, which led to the second element of the T<\/span>2<\/sup><\/span> equation. \u201cIf \u2018Transformation\u2019 is the most powerful word in any language, then <\/span>TRUST is the most important word<\/span><\/a>,\u201d Krach told the graduates. \u201cAnd when you take Transformation to the power of Trust, that\u2019s when the T<\/span>2<\/sup><\/span> magic happens.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Krach emphasized for the graduates that whenever you\u2019re starting companies from scratch, people have to Trust you, your product, your processes, and your company.<\/span> Krach\u2019s proof included even changing the way people have been signing for thousands of years. <\/span>For 10 years he would stand on stage and tell DocuSign employees, \u201cWe\u2019re not in the software business, <\/span>we\u2019re in the trust business<\/span><\/a>. We deal with people\u2019s most important documents. Those are the ones that you sign.\u201d Trust is the basis of every relationship\u2014business, personal, or otherwise. You do business with people you TRUST. You partner with people you TRUST. You buy from people you TRUST. You love people you TRUST.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Krach pointed out that this applies to the global stage as well. However, as he discovered, the world has some authoritarian leaders who are diametrically opposed to trust on a massive global scale.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Krach Goes to Washington<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

Krach <\/span>confided<\/span><\/a>, \u201cThis Ohio boy began his journey welding parts, and later had the good fortune of welding together billion-dollar companies. But even this dreamer could have never imagined that someday he would be called upon to run US economic diplomacy and have the opportunity to give back to this great nation which has given so much to him and his family.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

His charge was to develop and execute a <\/span>Global Economic Security Strategy<\/span><\/a> that drives economic growth, maximizes national security, and combats economic aggression. \u201cI was jumping in some deep water,\u201d he admitted. \u201cAs a lifelong businessman, it was <\/span>no small risk<\/span><\/a> on my part to leave my world in Silicon Valley to serve in government.\u201d He added with a twinkle in his eye, \u201cBut it turned out to be the most rewarding risk I\u2019ve ever taken\u2026<\/span>so far<\/span>.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span>n<\/span> Krach\u2019s<\/span> <\/span>Senate<\/span> confirmation<\/span> hearing<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span> he<\/span> described<\/span> the<\/span> nature<\/span> of<\/span> his<\/span> challenge<\/span>:<\/span> \u201cI<\/span> fully<\/span> appreciate<\/span> the<\/span> enormity<\/span> and<\/span> gravity<\/span> of<\/span> this<\/span> role<\/span>.<\/span> T<\/span>he<\/span> reality<\/span> we<\/span> face<\/span> as<\/span> a<\/span> nation<\/span> is<\/span> one<\/span> of<\/span> ever-increasing<\/span> cyber<\/span> warfare<\/span> and<\/span> seemingly<\/span> ceaseless<\/span> variations<\/span> of<\/span> intense,<\/span> even<\/span> weaponized<\/span> economic<\/span> competition.<\/span> Our<\/span> rivals<\/span> are<\/span> playing<\/span> the<\/span> long<\/span> game<\/span> and<\/span> they<\/span> are<\/span> playing<\/span> for<\/span> keeps\u2014a<\/span> four-dimensional<\/span> game<\/span> of<\/span> economic,<\/span> military,<\/span> diplomatic<\/span> and<\/span> cultural<\/span> chess<\/span> with<\/span> little<\/span> respect<\/span> for<\/span> human<\/span> rights,<\/span> intellectual<\/span> property,<\/span> international<\/span> law,<\/span> transparency,<\/span> the<\/span> environment,<\/span> or<\/span> the<\/span> sovereignty<\/span> of<\/span> other<\/span> nations.<\/span> To<\/span> prevail,<\/span> we<\/span> must<\/span> play<\/span> this<\/span> game<\/span> better<\/span> and<\/span> take<\/span> economic<\/span> statecraft<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> next<\/span> level.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Urgent Mission<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

Krach described to the graduates one of his most urgent missions: defeating an authoritarian regime\u2019s masterplan to control global 5G communications. \u201cTheir momentum seemed <\/span>unstoppable<\/span><\/a>, and it seemed inevitable. Politicians on both sides of the aisle were <\/span>hitting the panic button<\/span><\/a>,\u201d he observed.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\"US<\/a>In all likelihood, Krach was referring to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)\u2014though he refrained from specifically referring to them during the speech.<\/span> Their infiltration of global communications threatened not just telecom, but every form of current and upcoming technology that depends on wireless data: autonomous cars, power plants, electrical grids, manufacturing and sanitation facilities, medical technology, etc. In short, all the systems modern societies depend on to survive and thrive. Had their expansion continued unchecked, countries around the world would have literally been at Beijing\u2019s mercy. The situation was urgent; the problem was enormous; and the stakes were higher than they had ever been between the two c<\/span>ountries.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cAha!\u201d Moment <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

Krach recounted for the graduates his \u201caha!\u201d moment in creating the strategy that defeated Huawei\u2014talking with his foreign counterparts about their relationships with the \u201cregime,\u201d and being told again and again, \u201c<\/span>We don\u2019t trust them!<\/span><\/a>\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s when Krach and his team made Trust the core of their strategy and built the <\/span>Clean Network<\/span><\/a> alliance of countries and companies, which operate by a set trust principles like integrity, transparency, reciprocity, and respect for human rights, rule of law, property, national sovereignty, and the environment.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAll those things together equal TRUST,\u201d Krach emphasized. \u201cThese are things honored in the free world, and authoritarian regimes do not. They actually use them against us for their strategic advantage. In one <\/span>jiu-jitsu move<\/span><\/a>, we turned the tables and used those principles we call freedom against them.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

HBS Case Study<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

Based on a recent <\/span>HBS ca<\/span><\/a>se study<\/span><\/a> about his efforts at the State Department, \u201cThe Clean Network and the Future of Global Technology Competition,\u201d Krach believed the same leadership principles and strategies he used so effectively in building category kings and massive networks could be applied to economic statecraft. The team\u2019s strategic imperative was to <\/span>reverse the CCP\u2019s momentum<\/span><\/a> and replace it with our own momentum by de-positioning the regime through their greatest weakness: their lack of Trust. The objective was to defeat the CCP\u2019s masterplan and use 5G as beachhead to deliver a proven, repeatable, and enduring model for competing against China, Inc. across all sectors, since they all pose similar challenges.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>As dramatized in a two-part documentary \u201c<\/span>The American Dream Takes on China Inc.<\/span><\/a>,\u201d despite being built in the midst of the worst pandemic in a century, the network quickly grew to include 60 countries, hundreds of tech companies, and two-thirds of global GDP. Huawei went from 91 contacts down to barely two dozen. The CCP\u2019s 5G master plan had been thwarted, and for the first time, they had been soundly defeated by a US government-led initiative, <\/span>proving that China, Inc. is beatable<\/span><\/a> by exposing their biggest weakness, which is lack of Trust. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>According to <\/span>Bloomberg<\/span><\/a>, \u201cThe Clean Network\u2019s effort to create a united economic front is to China what George Kennan\u2019s \u201clong telegram\u201d of 1946 was to the Soviet Union. Kennan is considered by the State Department as the father of modern foreign policy who formulated the Cold War strategy of containment.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Transformational Diplomacy: Tech-Statecraft<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

One of their greatest accomplishments, Krach said, was the creation of a \u201cnew form of <\/span>transformational diplomacy<\/span><\/a> based on trust that integrates Silicon Valley strategies with traditional foreign policy tools which is now known as <\/span>Tech-Statecraft.<\/span><\/a>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps most importantly,\u201d Krach emphasized, \u201cthis NONPARTISAN model provided the unity and continuity of policy between Republican and Democratic Administrations, which is so vital to our allies.\u201d He highlighted Purdue\u2019s new <\/span>Center for Tech Diplomacy<\/span><\/a>, which is on the cutting edge of Tech-Statecraft. \u201cIt is fast becoming the world\u2019s preeminent institution for advancing freedom through trusted technology,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cT<\/span><\/b>2<\/sup><\/span><\/b>\u201d = Infinity to the Power of Infinity<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Krach closed his commencement address with a quote from former Secretary of State George Shultz, who died last year. \u201cDecember 13th marks my turning 100 years young,\u201d Shultz wrote. \u201cI\u2019ve learned much over that time, but looking back, I\u2019m struck that there is one lesson I learned early and then relearned over and over: <\/span>Trust is the coin of the realm.<\/span><\/a> When trust was in the room, whatever room that was\u2014the family room, the schoolroom, the locker room, the office room, the government room, or the military room\u2014good things happened. When trust was not in the room, good things did not happen. Everything else is details.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s now up to you to jump in that water over your head, and make the transformational magic happen, by trusting in yourself, and building trust wherever you go. Come on in, the water’s fine.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Krach reflected that he now understands that the simple T<\/span>2<\/sup><\/span>equation he unknowingly learned at Purdue is really a magic formula for making a difference in this world. \u201cA big difference, a little difference, but most of all a meaningful difference,\u201d he said.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo, what does Transformation to the power of Trust, equal?\u201d he asked the graduates. \u201cIt equals all things are possible, or Infinity to the power of Infinity,\u201d which his old engineering professor said \u201cis the biggest number in the world.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
