For former US Under Secretary of State Keith Krach, it\u2019s all about trust. \u201cTrust is the most important word in any language. You do business with people you trust; you partner with people you trust; you buy from people you trust, and you love the people you trust. Trust is sacrosanct,\u201d Krach says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By applying the principle of trust, Krach has proven the world does not belong to the totalitarians, and has empowered a new generation to think and act differently. Whether in business, philanthropy, education, or government, he is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/life-and-news-names-leadership-award-after-keith-krach\/\" target=\"_blank\">one of this generation\u2019s premier transformational leaders<\/a>. We must be able to trust that the information we use is uncorrupted and accessible at all times. Trust and strength are both indispensable to preserving the peace and prosperity we have enjoyed since the end of the Cold War.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Today, no one has advanced these concepts more than Mr. Keith Krach. Which is why I am so proud to endorse his recent nomination for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/roslynlayton\/2022\/03\/23\/2022-nobel-peace-prize-nominee-keith-krachs-trust-principle-is--antidote-to-authoritarianism\/?sh=2216560c126a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 Nobel Peace Prize<\/a>.<\/em><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p><strong>Trust Principle vs. Power Principle&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The China-Russia partnership lays bare the common \u201cPower Principle\u201d that animates the two. Both governments are revolutionary relics known for lawless behavior, duplicity, bullying, domestic oppression and thought control, coercive economic practices, and grave human-rights abuses. And now, Putin has shown himself to be a violent war criminal with Xi acting as his accomplice.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30031\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30031\" style=\"width: 378px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30031 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cartoon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"378\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cartoon.jpg 378w, https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cartoon-135x130.jpg 135w, https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cartoon-300x290.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30031\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Krach\u2019s Trust Principle stood in stark contrast with Xi\u2019s Power Principle when Krach made his historic visit and advocated for Taiwan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a single statement during his Senate confirmation hearing, Krach outlined the basic distinction\u2014and the implications of that distinction\u2014between the \u201cTrust Principle\u201d and the \u201cPower Principle.\u201d \u201cBoth sides of the aisle,\u201d he said, \u201ctruly understand that our rivals are playing the long game and they are playing for keeps. They fancy themselves as masters of a four-dimensional game of economic, military, diplomatic and cultural chess. Worst of all, they believe they\u2019re above the rules with little respect for human rights, property, international law, transparency, the environment, or the sovereignty of other nations. In this high-stakes competition, there is nothing static about superpower advantage\u2014it can vanish in an instant\u2014and there is no substitute for leadership. In order to prevail, we must play this game better and take statecraft to the next level.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKeith is a visionary,\u201d former Assistant Secretary of State Dave Stilwell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/op-eds\/keith-krachs-tech-diplomacy-merits-the-nobel-peace-prize\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argues<\/a>, \u201cbecause he recognized the utility and importance of access to reliable digital information and the associated vulnerabilities presented by the digital age. These democratic trust principles are honored in the free world. But authoritarian regimes like China and Russia do not. Instead, they have used them against us. Through this network of like-minded nations and companies, Krach and his team deployed the Trust Doctrine to overpower the \u201cPower Principle\u201d on one of the most urgent and strategic threats from an authoritarian regime in modern history: the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s 5G Masterplan to dominate telecommunications\u2014and all the data that goes through them\u2014around the globe. As former US National Security Advisor General H.R. McMaster <a href=\"https:\/\/bipartisanpolicy.org\/event\/tech-security-is-national-security-a-rare-briefing-with-the-hon-keith-j-krach-and-gen-h-r-mcmaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cThe Clean Network\u2019s defeat of the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s masterplan to control 5G communications was the first time a U.S. government-lead initiative proved that China\u2019s economic warfare is beatable because it exposed their biggest weakness: nobody trusts them. In less than a year, and during the worst period of the pandemic, the Clean Network grew to 60 Clean Countries representing two thirds of global GDP, alongside 200 Clean Telcos and a host of industry leading Clean Companies. The strategy of using 5G as the beachhead to build a network of trusted partners comprised of like-minded companies, countries, and civil society partners that operate by a set of trust principles created an enduring model for all areas of techno-economic competition. Furthermore, in a hyper-partisan age, Krach and his team were able to do this on a bipartisan basis. Support of freedom vs. authoritarianism, advocacy for Taiwan, and efforts to safeguard human rights are key themes of the nomination.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Likewise, <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmilitarynews.com\/2022\/03\/keith-krach-gets-nobel-peace-prize-nomination-for-campaign-against-chinese-authoritarianism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in an interview with American Military News<\/a>, Miles Yu, who is a professor of military Chinese military history at the United States Naval Academy, said that the Clean Network \u201cmobilized the entire power of the U.S. government and the nations of democracy in the world to basically pledge and create a mechanism through which the critical communications network will be clean of malign actors. [Krach] understands the moral side of technology. We\u2019re in the trust business.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As the CEO of DocuSign, he would stand on stage, sometimes with other CEOs like Deutsche Telekom\u2019s Tim H\u00f6ttges, and say, \u201cWe\u2019re not in the software business, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UdhBc3cSGxQ%2520t=42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we\u2019re in the trust business<\/a>. We deal with people\u2019s most important documents. Those are the ones that you sign. Trust is the basis of every relationship\u2014business, personal, or otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krach\u2019s efforts in Germany exemplified the importance of the private sector to the Trust Principle toolkit. Prior to meeting government officials, Krach utilized his long-standing business relationships to engage with more than twenty top German executives in Munich, Frankfurt, and Cologne. He would begin those discussion by appealing to the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundesregierung.de\/breg-en\/chancellor\/basic-law-470510#:~:text=Article%25201%2520%255BHuman%2520dignity%255D,of%2520justice%2520in%2520the%2520world.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Article 1 of the German Basic Law<\/a>, which states that, \u201cHuman dignity shall be inviolable. He also has been working with American corporations to free up 5G and bring the semiconductor manufacturing industry back to the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deployment of the Trust Principle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-09\/u-s-policy-against-china-america-first-is-becoming-america-and-others?sref=RfJLbe1B#_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>, harnessed the power of Metcalfe\u2019s Law to build a network of nations to counter China the Clean Network\u2019s effort to create a united economic front is to China what George Kennan\u2019s \u201clong telegram\u201d of 1946 was to the Soviet Union. Kennan is considered by the State Department as the father of modern foreign policy who formulated the Cold War strategy of containment. This threatens the CCP\u2019s narrative of \u201cone China\u201d that must include Taiwan, because it dispels the myth that democracy is incompatible with Chinese culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krach utilized the \u201cTrust Principle\u201d as the fulcrum in his relentless efforts to shield Taiwan from China\u2019s aggression by strengthening its economic ties to the US and its allies. In September 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/the-catalyst-for-stronger-us-taiwan-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Krach became the highest-ranking State Department official to visit Taiwan in 41 years<\/a>. China sent a welcoming party of 40 fighters and bombers into Taiwan\u2019s airspace to greet him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krach was there to, among other things, attend the funeral of President Lee Teng-hui\u2014the \u201cGeorge Washington\u201d of Taiwan\u2019s democracy. Largest onshoring in U.S. history and a deepening of US-Taiwan ties.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Taiwan\u2019s President Tsai summed up his historic trip by <a href=\"https:\/\/english.president.gov.tw\/NEWS\/6070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saying<\/a>, \u201cUnder Secretary Keith Krach\u2019s visit exemplified the remarkable possibilities of Taiwan-US relations.\u201d Indeed, his groundbreaking initiatives included the Lee Economic Prosperity Partnership (named after the father of Taiwan\u2019s democracy, President Lee), and the Science and Technology Cooperation Pact, which served as a model and platform for other democracies to build their relationship with Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krach\u2019s team also brought the world leader in semiconductor fabrication, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), along with its ecosystem, to the United States. The deal was heralded as a \u201cgame-changer\u201d due to its impact on securing the global semiconductor supply chain from authoritarian threats. Indeed, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tzq4_FseuM4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Krach has said<\/a> semiconductors are the most important industry to global tech security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many ways, Krach\u2019s support of Taiwan illustrates the power of the \u201cTrust Principle\u201d based on mutual benefit and respect, against that of China\u2019s \u201cPower Principle\u201d based on bullying and threats, and thus paves a way toward genuine peace and stability in the region. He has been one of the greatest advocates of Taiwan and its people of any American government official in living memory. He initiated the Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue between &nbsp;Taiwan and the US, and worked tirelessly to build clean and trusted networks of technology. Congratulations!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps more than any former US official, Krach has also earned the trust of the Uyghurs, and all those who stand for human rights around the globe.
