{"id":3285,"date":"2015-03-20T23:17:37","date_gmt":"2015-03-20T23:17:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/?p=3285"},"modified":"2016-09-10T00:30:40","modified_gmt":"2016-09-10T00:30:40","slug":"dancing-seal-is-first-non-human-mammal-to-keep-a-beat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/dancing-seal-is-first-non-human-mammal-to-keep-a-beat\/","title":{"rendered":"Dancing seal is first non-human mammal to keep a beat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/au\/team#sunanda-creagh\">Sunanda Creagh<\/a><em>, The Conversation<\/em><\/p>\n<figure class=\"align-right\"><img src=\"https:\/\/62e528761d0685343e1c-f3d1b99a743ffa4142d9d7f1978d9686.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/files\/21944\/width237\/w2mq7496-1364874065.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Ronan the sea lion was able to keep a musical beat, even when hearing a song for the first time.<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"attribution\"><span class=\"source\">American Psychological Association<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>US scientists have trained a seal to bob its head in time to music, in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/pubs\/journals\/features\/com-128-2-1.pdf\">study<\/a> that the researchers say presents the first ever evidence that non-human mammals can keep a beat.<\/p>\n<p>It was previously thought that only animals capable of vocal mimicry \u2013 birds and humans \u2013 could keep a beat in time to music.<\/p>\n<p>In a study published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/pubs\/journals\/features\/com-128-2-1.pdf\">Journal of Comparative Psychology<\/a>, researchers from the University of California Santa Cruz said they had trained a Californian sea lion named Ronan to bob her head in time to songs, including tunes she had not heard before.<\/p>\n<p>Previous studies had shown a sulfur-crested cockatoo could be trained to bob its head in time to a Backstreet Boys song across a range of tempos and that an African grey parrot and budgerigars could move in time or peck to the beat of a song.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Beat Keeping in a California Sea Lion (Ronan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHere we demonstrate that a less vocally flexible animal, a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus), can learn to entrain head bobbing to an auditory rhythm meeting three criteria: a behavioural response that does not reproduce the stimulus; performance transfer to a range of novel tempos; and entrainment to complex, musical stimuli,\u201d the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese findings show that the capacity for<br \/>\nentrainment of movement to rhythmic sounds does not depend on a capacity for vocal mimicry, and may be more widespread in the animal kingdom than previously hypothesised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ronan the seal was trained using fish rewards to dance in time to Creedence Clearwater Revival\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=clJb4zx0o1o\">\u201cDown on the Corner.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>She was soon also able to keep time even to songs she had not heard before, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6M6samPEMpM\">\u201cEverybody\u201d<\/a> by the Backstreet Boys, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_jLGa4X5H2c\">\u201cBoogie Wonderland\u201d<\/a> by Earth, Wind and Fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbility to find and keep the beat on two novel, quite different musical stimuli strongly suggests a flexible capability to entrain to complex stimuli,\u201d the authors said in their paper.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also conducted a test to rule out the possibility Ronan was bobbing her head a split second <em>after<\/em> hearing the beat \u2013 rather than anticipating it and bobbing her head in time to the beat.<\/p>\n<p>In this experiment, she bobbed her head in time to a metronome-like sound which was programmed to skip a beat. Ronan bobbed her head even even when the beat was missed.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Adrian North, Head of the School of Psychology at Curtin University and a specialist in the psychology of music said the findings did not surprise him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing inherently human about music. Across board, there is an awful lot of research showing that it\u2019s not just humans that react to music in a general way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s evidence that whale song has a proper thematic structure, that lab rats prefer the Lennon-McCartney version of \u2018Yesterday\u2019 to one the researchers played themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0140673688921708\">human foetuses in the womb are capable of learning music<\/a>, Professor North said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you take a bunch of pregnant women and have them watching Neighbours every day, up to two months after they are born the children will react to the theme music,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Professor North said studies showed that the human aesthetic response to music happens in a the autonomic nervous system \u2013 the fight or flight part of the brain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a basic part of the nervous system functioning, so it\u2019s not surprising animals may respond in that way.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Alan Harvey, Winthrop Professor of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology at University of Western Australia and an expert in music and neuroscience, said the seal study was interesting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s clear evidence of links between the auditory apparatus and circuits involved in movement, between the basal ganglia and the cerebellum and motor cortex.
