Thorpe<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/vanderbilt-university-1293\">Vanderbilt University<\/a><\/em>; <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/michael-vandenbergh-385138\">Michael Vandenbergh<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/vanderbilt-university-1293\">Vanderbilt University<\/a><\/em>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/zdravka-tzankova-1046004\">Zdravka Tzankova<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/vanderbilt-university-1293\">Vanderbilt University<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the federal government moves to <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.law.columbia.edu\/content\/climate-backtracker\">eliminate U.S. climate rules<\/a>, companies still face pressure to be better stewards of the planet from their <a href=\"https:\/\/nielseniq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/2022-10_ESG_eBook_NIQ_FNL.pdf\">customers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackrock.com\/corporate\/sustainability\/low-carbon-transition\/institutional-investor-survey#investment-priority\">investors<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/sustainability-jobs-training-salesforce-research\/\">employees<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/education.cfr.org\/learn\/reading\/federal-state-local-government-climate\">local communities<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/equator-principles.com\/\">lenders<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iais.org\/activities-topics\/climate-risk\/\">insurers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/business-economy-euro\/doing-business-eu\/sustainability-due-diligence-responsible-business\/corporate-sustainability-due-diligence_en#what-are-the-obligations-for-companies\">global trading partners<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2es.org\/content\/state-climate-policy\/\">many states<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of those groups knows it will face <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-07219-0\">increasing costs<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(24)01822-1\/fulltext\">rising temperatures<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/iccwbo.org\/news-publications\/policies-reports\/new-report-extreme-weather-events-cost-economy-2-trillion-over-the-last-decade\/\">extreme weather<\/a> if corporations don\u2019t rein in their greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many companies will find that returning to <a href=\"https:\/\/19january2021snapshot.epa.gov\/air-research\/history-air-pollution_.html\">past polluting ways<\/a> isn\u2019t in their best interest. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kearney.com\/service\/sustainability\/article\/staying-the-course-chief-financial-officers-and-the-green-transition\">Over 60%<\/a> of chief financial officers surveyed by global management firm Kearney in December 2024 signaled that they intended to invest at least 2% of their revenue in sustainability in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These companies <a href=\"https:\/\/yaleclimateconnections.org\/2024\/11\/some-businesses-fight-climate-change-quietly-but-they-still-do-it\/\">may maintain a low profile<\/a> about climate change while the Trump administration is in power, but they have strong financial incentives to continue to reduce their emissions and their own climate risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We study <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=Zsbrdt4AAAAJ&amp;hl=en\">private<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/tag\/ethan-thorpe\/\">environmental<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/sociology\/bio\/zdravka-tzankova\/\">governance<\/a> \u2013 the ways companies and organizations work outside government to improve the nation\u2019s sustainability and reduce environmental damage. Our work finds that, in this polarized era, addressing climate and sustainability challenges is not just a matter of government action. That\u2019s because a lot of climate and sustainability progress is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westacademic.com\/Light-Salzman-and-Vanderberghs-Private-Environmental-Governance-Concepts-and-Insights-9781636596945\">underway<\/a> in the private sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Sustainability matters to companies\u2019 bottom lines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Businesses have used climate and sustainability initiatives for years to make their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41558-021-01271-8\">operations<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S092134492200372X\">supply chains<\/a> more efficient and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41558-021-01271-8\">reduce their long-term costs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When McDonald\u2019s faced public pressure to reduce waste in the late 1980s, the company teamed up with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/impact\/mcdonalds-saves-billions-cutting-waste\">Environmental Defense Fund<\/a> to analyze the problem. It was able to reduce its waste by 30% over the following decade, saving the company US$6 million a year. This early risk-taking by McDonald\u2019s opened the door for other environmental groups to help businesses understand how to reduce their environmental impact, including emissions, while boosting the companies\u2019 profitability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/661157\/original\/file-20250410-56-ml723u.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=754&amp;fit=clip\" alt=\"A large carbon ship is at port being stacked with giant shipping containers.\" \/><figcaption>The shipping company Maersk expects to cut emissions and boost productivity at the same time with better logistics and low-emissions ships like this one, which runs on methanol. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/news-photo\/march-2024-hamburg-hsmburg-the-worlds-first-large-methanol-news-photo\/2110571250?adppopup=true\">Axel Heimken\/picture alliance via Getty Images<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Maersk, the logistics giant responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.law.umich.edu\/mjeal\/vol12\/iss1\/2\/\">nearly a quarter<\/a> of global shipping, has responded to pressure from its corporate customers with a plan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hapag-lloyd.com\/en\/services-information\/gemini-cooperation.html\">to reduce carbon emissions<\/a> by one-third from 2022 to 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2045. It expects the combination of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maersk.com\/news\/articles\/2025\/02\/28\/maersk-names-its-eleventh-dual-fuel-methanol-vessel-albert-maersk\">low-emissions vessels<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maersk.com\/news\/articles\/2024\/05\/31\/maersk-and-the-gemini-cooperation-achieve-its-ninety-plus-schedule-reliability-goal\">more efficient delivery network<\/a> with hubs and shuttles to help meet its climate goals while increasing productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies have also helped drive the expansion of renewable energy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lazard.com\/media\/xemfey0k\/lazards-lcoeplus-june-2024-_vf.pdf\">motivated by the competitive economics of renewables<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-00743-7\">business opportunities<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.atmeta.com\/climate\/\">Facebook\u2019s parent company Meta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.google\/operating-sustainably\/net-zero-carbon\/\">Google<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3594826\">invested nearly $2 billion<\/a> in projects to provide renewable energy in the Tennessee Valley Authority service area, even though no government required them to do so. And major companies continued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/edp-renewables-signs-virtual-power-purchase-agreement-with-microsoft-2025-02-10\/\">signing<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwe.com\/en\/press\/rwe-clean-energy\/2025-03-18-rwe-signs-long-term-ppa-with-meta\/\">renewable energy<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf-re.com\/press-release\/edf-renewables-north-america-and-masdar-sign-power-purchase-agreement-with-soluna-holdings\/\">power purchase agreements<\/a> in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/09\/20\/nx-s1-5120581\/three-mile-island-nuclear-power-plant-microsoft-ai\">Microsoft<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/market-intelligence\/en\/news-insights\/articles\/2024\/3\/talen-energy-sells-pa-datacenter-campus-to-amazon-web-services-for-650m-80711401\">Amazon<\/a> are responding to massive new power demand by trying to locate data centers near existing nuclear power plants for cleaner energy supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Thousands of companies report emissions via private systems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another sign of companies\u2019 continuing commitment to sustainability is how many of them measure and report their greenhouse gas emissions even when governments do not require them to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/pt\/insights\/disclosure-data-dashboard-2024\">25,000 companies<\/a> representing two-thirds of total global market capitalization and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\/data\/scores\">85% of the S&amp;P 500<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\/data\/scores\">report their emissions<\/a> to the nonprofit CDP. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1126\/science.add0206?casa_token=oLpCi5V5iZwAAAAA:aY3Mnw-j5COKDlBxpbkmCVSQTk9yFNB5LFv7JQ3_g_vA56OY-r6CmxtO_6U_QxhEyXeTV4mEIAB8j3k\">Disclosing emissions<\/a> is like keeping a fitness journal with a personal trainer. It helps a company track its progress and plan for future financial and environmental risks. More than 12,500 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/pt\/insights\/disclosure-data-dashboard-2024\">small- and medium-size companies<\/a> also disclosed emissions to CDP in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these companies were initially motivated by <a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/about-us\">pressure from environmental groups<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4098237\">corporate customers<\/a>. Today, they have more reason to continue paying attention to emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.arb.ca.gov\/our-work\/programs\/mandatory-greenhouse-gas-emissions-reporting\">California<\/a> has its own formal reporting requirements designed to encourage companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. And <a href=\"https:\/\/greencentralbanking.com\/2025\/03\/07\/us-states-forge-ahead-with-climate-rules-even-as-trump-rolls-back-policies\/\">other states<\/a> are considering setting climate disclosure rules. The Trump administration has promised to challenge them, and announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/trump-epa-greenhouse-gas-reporting-climate-crisis\">that it also plans to cut<\/a> federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgreporting\">greenhouse gas reporting standards<\/a>, but companies will likely still face reporting rules in the future. The <a href=\"https:\/\/greencentralbanking.com\/2023\/07\/06\/eu-climate-disclosure-rules-could-impact-thousands-of-us-firms\/\">European Union also has reporting requirements<\/a>. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20250331IPR27557\/sustainability-and-due-diligence-meps-agree-to-delay-application-of-new-rules\">delayed their start date in April 2025<\/a> to give companies more time to comply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Cleaner supply chains can also be more efficient<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Managing supply chains with climate and environmental risks in mind can also help businesses increase their efficiency and reduce the risk that climate change will disrupt their operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The supply chain is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hinrichfoundation.com\/research\/wp\/sustainable\/unlocking-the-scope-3-opportunity\/\">largest source<\/a> of the average company\u2019s emissions and may be particularly vulnerable to climate shocks. A storm can easily disrupt vital production or shipping, and droughts or heat waves can damage crops, stop work and increase costs. <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.cdp.net\/cdp-production\/cms\/reports\/documents\/000\/007\/890\/original\/CDP_HSBC_Report_2024.pdf?1727343420\">Companies estimate<\/a> climate-related supply chain risks at $162 billion, nearly three times the cost of mitigating those risks. Many companies therefore have incentives to reduce emissions and their exposure to related hazards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.law.umich.edu\/mjeal\/vol12\/iss1\/2\/\">80% of the largest companies<\/a> across seven global economic sectors had set environmental requirements for suppliers within their value chains as of 2023. These requirements include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cvshealth.com\/news\/sustainability\/our-commitment-to-reducing-our-greenhouse-gas-emissions.html\">reporting carbon emissions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabilityconsortium.org\/download\/sustainable-commodity-supply-chains-project\/\">reducing emissions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mobilecontent.costco.com\/live\/resource\/img\/static-us-landing-pages\/4aEnvironmentalImpact-LandStewardship.pdf\">using sustainable forestry practices<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walmart eliminated 1 billion tons of carbon emissions from its supply chain <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.walmart.com\/news\/2024\/02\/21\/walmart-suppliers-lead-the-charge-help-deliver-project-gigaton-goal-more-than-six-years-early\">in less than seven years<\/a> by sharing its expertise with suppliers and working with them to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walmartsustainabilityhub.com\/reporting\/emissions-targets\">reduce their emissions<\/a>. Walmart\u2019s global director of sustainable retail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/news\/walmart-project-gigaton-scope-3-supplier-emissions-ron-voglewede\/710733\/\">noted in 2024 that<\/a> the effort made its suppliers more efficient, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Keeping employees and customers happy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies also face pressure from average people \u2212 both employees and customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-022-32412-y\">More than two-thirds<\/a> of Americans support action to address climate change. Even <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=5045216\">companies that are not consumer-facing<\/a> need retail customer and employee support. Pro-climate actions have been found to improve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yumpu.com\/en\/document\/read\/8115648\/advancing-sustainability-hrs-role-society-for-human-resource-\">employee<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.51594\/ijmer.v6i8.1365\">customer<\/a> loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outdoor clothing company Patagonia <a href=\"https:\/\/kpmg.com\/us\/en\/media\/news\/customer-experience-excellence-2024.html\">ranked third<\/a> out of over 300 brands in a 2024 customer experience survey, in part because of its reputation for sustainable practices. Many of the over 10,000 respondents cited the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia.com\/activism\/\">sustainable practices<\/a> as the leading reason for their support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many companies also face pressure from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0929119915000930?casa_token=IaA5KZ7mt0QAAAAA:8FmbJXON2TmBa0kvj-Qtxk-O8l4uQoXGy9nR2_bAYQR_qw6BA6LDy7gUvHAkMvr3UnGWYoudLA\">lenders<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/industry\/financial-services\/financial-services-industry-predictions\/2024\/impact-of-climate-change-on-commercial-real-estate-insurance-costs.html\">insurers<\/a> who want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iais.org\/activities-topics\/climate-risk\/\">reduce climate risks<\/a> to their own bottom lines. <a href=\"https:\/\/global.insure-our-future.com\/\">Dozens of insurers<\/a> have committed to ending or restricting underwriting for new fossil fuel projects. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/markets\/2025\/02\/20\/insuring-the-transition-underwriting-as-a-tool-on-climate\/\">Others use incentives<\/a>, such as lower premiums for companies that reduce emissions or invest in climate adaptation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate change may accelerate the current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissre.com\/dam\/jcr:1d793484-9b96-4e54-91c3-09f8fc841bde\/2023-05-sigma-01-english.pdf\">5% to 7% annual increase<\/a> in insured losses, according to estimates from insurer Swiss Re. That has led some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/climate-risk-insurance-future-capitalism-g%C3%BCnther-thallinger-smw5f\/\">insurance leaders<\/a> to recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/esg.wharton.upenn.edu\/engagement\/digital-dialogues\/driving-decarbonization-through-the-insurance-sector\/\">insurance companies take bigger steps<\/a> to reduce emissions through their investments and policy underwriting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Private climate governance can help buy time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Media attention and interest group advocacy is often focused on government actions, but decisions made in boardrooms and through initiatives with nonprofits have created an important kind of private climate governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As companies respond to their own economic risks and incentives, they help buy time to avoid the worst impacts of climate change until the political system recognizes the financial risks posed to the entire country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/ethan-i-thorpe-2339690\">Ethan I.
