That is a key finding of a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.ajcnut.2025.06.017\">new peer-reviewed study<\/a> that my colleagues and I published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While vitamin D has long been known for its <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/nu15030593\">role in maintaining bone health<\/a>, scientists have since uncovered its importance in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/biom11111624\">regulating immune function, reducing inflammation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/nan.12020\">protecting the nervous system<\/a>. Now, growing evidence \u2013 including our new findings \u2013 suggest it may also support brain development beginning in the womb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My team and I found that the link between prenatal vitamin D levels and childhood cognition was strongest among Black families, who <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/nu13020499\">also face higher rates of vitamin D deficiency<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This suggests that vitamin D supplementation may be a promising, low-cost strategy to support brain development while reducing racial disparities. Our study also suggested that vitamin D levels early in pregnancy may be most important for childhood cognitive development, highlighting the importance of early action by health care providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We analyzed more than 900 mother-child pairs across the U.S. who participated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/echochildren.org\/\">large national study called ECHO<\/a>, short for Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes. We measured vitamin D in the mothers\u2019 blood during pregnancy and assessed children\u2019s cognitive abilities using a standardized test battery. We also accounted for other important factors that shape childhood development such as the mother\u2019s education, neighborhood conditions and the child\u2019s age and sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new study builds on our earlier findings that higher vitamin D levels during pregnancy are <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/jn\/nxaa309\">linked to higher IQ<\/a> in early childhood and with <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.tjnut.2023.03.005\">reduced behavioral problems<\/a> in middle childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collectively, these studies suggest that vitamin D plays a crucial role in brain development during pregnancy, with lasting benefits for children\u2019s cognitive and behavioral outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/680760\/original\/file-20250717-66-iuame4.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=754&amp;fit=clip\" alt=\"A female doctor holding a clipboard and pen watches a young child play with blocks.\" \/><figcaption>The children of mothers who had higher vitamin D levels during pregnancy scored better on tests of memory, attention and problem-solving skills at ages 7 to 12. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/photo\/assessment-of-kids-mental-development-professional-royalty-free-image\/1387958415?phrase=child%20health%20development&amp;searchscope=image,film&amp;adppopup=true\">Prostock-Studio\/iStock via Getty Images Plus<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>Why it matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitamin D deficiency is a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fnut.2023.1070808\">common global problem<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the U.S., about 42% of adults have <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.nutres.2010.12.001\">vitamin D levels below 20 nanograms per milliliter<\/a>, or ng\/ml, a commonly used cutoff for deficiency. About <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.ajog.2009.11.036\">a third of U.S. pregnant women<\/a> are deficient, and the rates are even higher among Black pregnant women, with <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.ajog.2009.11.036\">80% found to be deficient<\/a>. This racial difference is partly due to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1039\/c5pp00168d\">differences in skin pigmentation<\/a>, as melanin pigment reduces the skin\u2019s ability to produce vitamin D from sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although we can get vitamin D both from sun exposure and our diets, deficiency is common because these sources don\u2019t meet everyone\u2019s needs. Sunlight isn\u2019t always a reliable source, especially for people with darker skin, those living in northern climates or those who often wear sunscreen or sun-protective clothing. Natural food sources such as fatty fish, egg yolks and certain mushrooms contain some vitamin D, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\">fortified products<\/a> such as milk and breakfast cereals help, but not everyone eats enough of these foods to maintain healthy vitamin D levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why supplements are often necessary and are recommended in many cases by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/\">Dietary Guidelines for Americans<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although current guidelines recommend that pregnant women consume <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/#en39\">600 international units, or IUs, of vitamin D<\/a> daily, higher doses of at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/committee-opinion\/articles\/2011\/07\/vitamin-d-screening-and-supplementation-during-pregnancy\">1,000 to 2,000 IU<\/a> are often needed to correct deficiency. On average, U.S. women consume <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/ARSUserFiles\/80400530\/pdf\/1516\/Table_37_SUP_GEN_15.pdf\">only 168 IU<\/a> from food and beverages, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.puritan.com\/multivitamins-prenatal-643\/prenatal-vitamins-003700\">many prenatal vitamins provide<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gnc.com\/prenatal\/214312.html\">just 400 IU<\/a>. This highlights an important opportunity for clinicians to improve screening and support around vitamin D supplementation both before and during pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a simple, low-cost strategy such as prenatal vitamin D supplementation can help support brain development, it may yield lasting benefits for children. Long-term studies have shown that higher cognitive scores in childhood are linked to better <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.intell.2022.101682\">memory and reasoning in older age<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1136\/bmj.j2708\">longer lifespan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>What still isn\u2019t known<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While our studies have linked higher vitamin D levels in pregnancy to improved cognitive and behavioral development in children, we cannot yet prove that vitamin D is the direct cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, studies called randomized controlled trials \u2013 the gold standard of research \u2013 are needed to confirm these findings and determine how best to translate them into clinical practice.
