On Sept. 28, 2025, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2025\/10\/03\/michigan-church-shooting-victims-grand-blanc-township-lds\/86498026007\/\">shooting and arson<\/a> at a Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Michigan killed four people and wounded eight more. What\u2019s more, Russell M. Nelson, president of the church, died the day before at age 101. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/learn\/how-a-prophet-is-chosen?lang=eng\">Based on protocol<\/a>, his role will most likely be filled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/learn\/dallin-h-oaks?lang=eng\">Dallin H. Oaks<\/a>, the longest-serving of the church\u2019s top leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next president will inherit leadership of a religious institution that is both deeply American and increasingly global \u2013 diversity at odds with the way it\u2019s typically represented in mainstream media, from \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7018258\/the-secret-lives-of-mormon-wives-hulu-explained\/\">The Secret Life of Mormon Wives<\/a>\u201d to <a href=\"https:\/\/bookofmormonbroadway.com\/\">\u201cThe Book of Mormon\u201d Broadway musical<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?hl=en&amp;user=M3owt_AAAAAJ&amp;view_op=list_works&amp;sortby=pubdate\">a cultural anthropologist and ethnographer<\/a>, I research Latter-day Saints communities across the United States, particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proquest.com\/docview\/2813777758?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;fromopenview=true&amp;sourcetype=Dissertations%20&amp;%20Theses\">Latina immigrants<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/00027642241285018\">young adults<\/a>. Today, though, only <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1163\/2589742x-bja10019\">42% of its residents are members<\/a>. The stereotype of Latter-day Saints as mostly white, conservative Americans is just one of many <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-michigan-church-shooting-sits-within-a-long-history-of-hatred-against-mormons-in-america-266481\">long-standing misconceptions<\/a> about LDS communities and beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people are surprised to learn there are vibrant congregations far from the American West\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldatlas.com\/articles\/where-is-the-mormon-corridor.html\">Mormon Corridor<\/a>.\u201d There are devout Latter-day Saints everywhere from <a href=\"https:\/\/news-africa.churchofjesuschrist.org\/article\/from-freeze-to-fire\">Ghana<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeastmonitor.com\/20221212-uae-mormons-to-have-first-temple-in-the-middle-east\/\">United Arab Emirates<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2019\/02\/26\/russian-mormons-search-for-identity-and-acceptance-in-an-american-church-a64574\">Russia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/religion\/2025\/07\/04\/lds-branches-shut-down-beijing\/\">mainland China<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Global growth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph Smith founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in upstate New York in 1830 and immediately <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org\/article\/history-of-missionary-work-in-the-church\">sent missionaries<\/a> to preach along the frontier. The first overseas missionaries traveled to England in 1837.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after World War II, church leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/manual\/church-history-in-the-fulness-of-times\/chapter-forty-two?lang=eng\">overhauled their missionary approach<\/a> to increase the number of international missions. This strategy led to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/978-3-030-52616-0_4\">growth across the globe<\/a>, especially in <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.usu.edu\/etd\/8900\/\">Central America<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5406\/dialjmormthou.46.3.0045\">South America<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proquest.com\/docview\/2724233515?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;fromopenview=true&amp;sourcetype=Dissertations%20&amp;%20Theses\">Pacific Islands<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the church has over <a href=\"https:\/\/news-africa.churchofjesuschrist.org\/facts-and-statistics\">17.5 million members<\/a>, according to church records. A majority <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/learn\/facts-statistics?lang=eng\">live outside the U.S.<\/a>, spread across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/ensign\/2005\/01\/news-of-the-church\/church-growing-in-more-than-160-countries?lang=eng\">more than 160 countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way the church and researchers track this global growth is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechurchnews.com\/members\/2024\/06\/08\/charts-growth-church-jesus-christ-latter-day-saints-1830-2023-member-temples-wards-stakes\/\">by construction of new temples<\/a>.These buildings, used not for weekly worship but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/comeuntochrist\/article\/temples\">special ceremonies<\/a> like weddings, were once almost exclusively located in the United States. Today, they exist <a href=\"https:\/\/churchofjesuschristtemples.org\/statistics\/locations\/\">in dozens of countries<\/a>, from Argentina to Tonga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Nelson\u2019s presidency, which began in 2018, he announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechurchnews.com\/temples\/2025\/04\/10\/by-the-numbers-look-200-temples-announced-president-nelson-7-years\/\">200 new temples<\/a>, more than any of his predecessors. Temples are a physical and symbolic representation of the church\u2019s commitment to being a global religion, although cultural tensions remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/695261\/original\/file-20251008-56-u08l9p.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=754&amp;fit=clip\" alt=\"Two men in suits walk by a large map of the world framed on the wall of a hallway.\" \/><figcaption>Two missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints walk through the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, in 2008. <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ap.org\/detail\/MormonMissionariesRussia\/4c503b54dcea4b1ab7eb3f44f2ec5da8\/photo?vs=false\">AP Photo\/George Frey<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Among U.S. members, demographics are also shifting. Seventy-two percent of American members are white, down from 85% in 2007, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/religious-landscape-study\/religious-tradition\/latter-day-saint-mormon\/?utm_source=Pew+Research+Center&amp;utm_campaign=74f329890a-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2025_09_30_06_50&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_-74f329890a-401090902&amp;dialogId=dialog_race-and-ethnicity&amp;activeChartId=30c34b3d90d4d76aebac7aaeb8c917d7\">according to the Pew Research Center<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/future-mormon-church-it-s-latino-n570621\">Growing numbers of Latinos<\/a> \u2013 12% of U.S. members \u2013 have played a significant role sustaining congregations across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are congregations in every U.S. state, including the small community of Grand Blanc, Michigan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2025\/10\/03\/michigan-church-shooting-victims-grand-blanc-township-lds\/86498026007\/\">site of the tragic shooting<\/a>. Suspect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/28\/us\/thomas-sanford-michigan-shooting-suspect\">Thomas Jacob Sanford<\/a>, who was fatally shot by police, had gone on a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2025\/09\/29\/alleged-grand-blanc-attacker-thomas-sanford-said-mormons-were-the-antichrist-burton-man-kris-johns\/86424379007\/?gnt-cfr=1&amp;gca-cat=p&amp;gca-uir=false&amp;gca-epti=z115144p115550c115550u002844e001300v115144&amp;gca-ft=35&amp;gca-ds=sophi\">tirade against Latter-day Saints<\/a> during a conversation with a local political candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the following days, an American member of the church raised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/detroit\/news\/michigan-latter-day-saints-church-congregant-fundraiser-mass-shooter\/\">hundreds of thousands of dollars<\/a> for Sanford\u2019s family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Growing pains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the church\u2019s diversity, its institutional foundations remain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2021\/01\/the-most-american-religion\/617263\/\">firmly rooted<\/a> in the United States. The top leadership bodies are still composed almost entirely of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/learn\/quorum-of-the-twelve-apostles?lang=eng\">white men<\/a>, and most are American-born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the church continues to grow, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5325\/jworlchri.13.1.0026\">questions arise<\/a> about how well the norms of a Utah-based church fit the realities of members in Manila or Mexico City, Bangalore or Berlin. How much room is there, even in U.S. congregations, for local cultural expressions of faith?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proquest.com\/docview\/2813777758?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;fromopenview=true&amp;sourcetype=Dissertations%20&amp;%20Theses\">Latino Latter-day Saints<\/a> and members in Latin America, for example, have faced pushback against cultural traditions that were seen as distinctly \u201cnot LDS,\u201d such as making altars and giving offerings during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/arts\/what-is-dia-de-los-muertos-an-expert-explains-the-holiday-celebrating-loved-ones-who-have-died\">Dia de los Muertos<\/a>. In 2021, the church launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veniracristo.org\/dia-de-los-muertos-2021\">Spanish-language campaign<\/a> using Day of the Dead imagery to increase interest among Latinos. Many members were happy to see this representation. Still, some women I spoke with said that an emphasis on whiteness and American nationalism, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarlypublishingcollective.org\/uip\/jmh\/article-abstract\/50\/3\/121\/388041\/Latina-Mormons-Remember-SB1070-and-Other-Anti?redirectedFrom=fulltext\">anti-immigrant rhetoric<\/a> they\u2019d heard from other members, deterred them from fully celebrating their cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/695257\/original\/file-20251008-66-66bq9d.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=754&amp;fit=clip\" alt=\"A couple dressed nicely and holding hands walks by a large portrait of Jesus, portrayed as a bearded white man, inside a large hallway.\" \/><figcaption>People attend the twice-annual conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 6, 2024, in Salt Lake City. <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ap.org\/detail\/MormonConference\/cf3c5bea72534a33a8554be45e0f8c60\/photo?vs=false\">AP Photo\/Rick Bowmer<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Even aesthetic details, like musical styles, often reflect a distinctly American model. The standardized hymnal, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/media\/music\/collections\/hymns?lang=eng\">contains patriotic songs<\/a> like \u201cAmerica the Beautiful.\u201d This emphasis on American culture can feel especially out of sync in places in countries with <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org\/article\/30-countries-with-the-most-latter-day-saints\">high membership rates<\/a> that have histories of U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/zoltan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/358\/2024\/04\/InterventionsList2024.pdf\">military<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brasildefato.com.br\/2024\/04\/01\/understand-the-us-participation-in-the-military-coup-of-1964-in-brazil-and-what-may-still-be-revealed\/\">political<\/a> interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expectations about clothing and physical appearance, too, have prompted questions about representation, belonging and authority. It was only in 2024, for instance, that the church offered members in humid areas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/08\/15\/nx-s1-5484938\/mormon-women-can-wear-new-sacred-undergarments-some-wonder-why-now\">sleeveless versions<\/a> of the sacred garments Latter-day Saints wear under clothing as a reminder of their faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, the church <a href=\"https:\/\/faq.churchofjesuschrist.org\/can-mormons-have-tattoos\">viewed tattoos as taboo<\/a> \u2013 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/2000\/10\/great-shall-be-the-peace-of-thy-children?lang=eng\">violation of the sanctity of the body<\/a>. Many parts of the world have thousands of years of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/culture\/article\/in-polynesia-tattoos-are-more-than-skin-deep\">sacred tattooing traditions<\/a> \u2013 including Oceania, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/news\/2017\/06\/02\/the-most-mormon-country-in-the-world-its-tonga\/\">high rates of church membership<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Change ahead?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Among many challenges, the next president of the church will navigate how to lead a global church from its American headquarters \u2013 a church that continues to be misunderstood and stereotyped, sometimes to the point of violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/695259\/original\/file-20251008-56-a20xdg.jpeg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=754&amp;fit=clip\" alt=\"A white building in the distance, with palm trees and a clear reflecting pool in the foreground.\" \/><figcaption>The temple in Laie, Hawaii, opened in the early 1900s, making it one of the church\u2019s oldest. <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Laie_temple.JPG\">Kaveh\/Wikimedia Commons<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0\/\">CC BY-SA<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of Latter-day Saints continues to grow in many parts of the world, but this growth brings a greater need for cultural sensitivity. The church, historically very uniform in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proquest.com\/docview\/746479054?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;fromopenview=true&amp;sourcetype=Dissertations%20&amp;%20Theses\">efforts to standardize<\/a> Latter-day Saints history, art and teachings, is finding that harder to maintain when congregations span dozens of countries, languages, customs and histories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizing the church like a corporation, with a top-down decision-making process, can also make it difficult to address <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuow.org\/stories\/mormons-grapple-with-church-s-history-of-discrimination-amid-wider-racial-reckoning\">painful racial histories<\/a> and the needs of marginalized groups, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-news\/mormon-transgender-restrictions-lds-church-rcna167582\">like LGBTQ+ members<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transition in leadership offers an opportunity not only for the church but for the broader public to better understand the multifaceted, global nature of Latter-day Saints\u2019 lives today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/brittany-romanello-1382986\">Brittany Romanello<\/a>, Assistant Professor of Sociology, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/university-of-arkansas-1515\">University of Arkansas<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article is republished from <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\">The Conversation<\/a> under a Creative Commons license.
