{"id":4108,"date":"2015-08-07T00:54:51","date_gmt":"2015-08-07T00:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/?p=4108"},"modified":"2015-08-07T00:54:51","modified_gmt":"2015-08-07T00:54:51","slug":"how-music-became-so-core-to-james-bond-that-someone-bet-15000-on-the-theme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/how-music-became-so-core-to-james-bond-that-someone-bet-15000-on-the-theme\/","title":{"rendered":"How music became so core to James Bond that someone bet \u00a315,000 on the theme"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>How music became so core to James Bond that someone bet \u00a315,000 on the theme<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/catherine-haworth-181958\">Catherine Haworth<\/a><br \/>\n<em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/university-of-huddersfield\">University of Huddersfield<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Betting was recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2015\/jul\/29\/bond-theme-betting-suspended-15000-radiohead-ellie-goulding\">suspended<\/a> by William Hill on the identity of the singer of the theme song for the next James Bond film, Spectre, after an attempt to place \u00a315,000 on Thom Yorke and Radiohead.<\/p>\n<p>Speculation over Radiohead\u2019s involvement in the soundtrack for Bond 24 makes them the latest in a long line of rumoured performers, including Sam Smith, Florence and the Machine, Paloma Faith, Lorde, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-3177238\/Ellie-Goulding-wears-figure-hugging-mini-skirt-Abbey-Road-studios-fuels-James-Bond-soundtrack-rumours-social-media.html\">Ellie Goulding<\/a> \u2013 whose cryptic social media posts have also sparked a recent flurry of betting.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with the hugely successful Bond franchise, \u00a315,000 is obviously small change. But the ongoing interest in who will provide Spectre\u2019s vocals demonstrates the prominence of music in the Bond franchise\u2019s well-oiled marketing machine, as well as within the films themselves. For what other film can you imagine the choice of musician sparking such intrigue?<\/p>\n<p>Music has been a core element of the Bond brand since the 1962 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0055928\/\">adaptation<\/a> of Ian Fleming\u2019s novel Dr. No, helping to tie together films, videogames, merchandise, and marketing. It is part of the Bond \u201cformula\u201d, a key element that remains pleasurably familiar, but offers enough scope for variation to keep new products feeling fresh and relevant.<\/p>\n<p><figure><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Classic pop<\/h2>\n<p>Bond soundtracks sit at the intersection of two traditions. They combine the extensive orchestral scores of Hollywood\u2019s golden age with popular music that keeps pace with changing tastes.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the classic signature sound was British composer John Barry, who assisted Monty Norman in scoring Dr. No and provided incidental music and title songs for a further 11 Bond films. Barry combines jazzy, big band brass and sweeping, romantic string lines with timeless songwriting structures. His mixture of classic and contemporary styles has continued to influence recent Bond composers including David Arnold and Thomas Newman.<\/p>\n<p>The Bond sound is dominated by the music of 007 himself, highlighting his experience and particular brand of heroic masculinity. Most famously, this takes the shape of Norman\u2019s iconic James Bond Theme, indelibly linked with 007\u2019s trademark \u2013 \u201cBond. James Bond\u201d. \u2013 first seen in Dr. No\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bc7r5_gSAVg\">casino scene<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The theme acts as both a stylistic anchor and a basis for musical development, as the soundtrack to Spectre\u2019s recently released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LTDaET-JweU\">trailer<\/a> shows. Its memorable and succinct hooks \u2013 from the chromatic opening bass loop and guitarist Vic Flick\u2019s surf rock melody, through to the howling trumpets of the swing-style climax \u2013 provide the basis for many other musical cues and motifs within the films and songs of the franchise. Familiar music is combined with new material composed to fit the storyline and characters of 007\u2019s latest escapade.<\/p>\n<p><figure><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Licence to thrill<\/h2>\n<p>But the Bond franchise isn\u2019t content with just an orchestral score. No Jaws or Lord of the Rings, this. They also bring the big names of popular culture on board, with a new themed song accompanying the opening credit sequence to each Bond film.<\/p>\n<p>These sequences are one of the most spectacular and influential elements in a series strewn with exotic locations, breathtaking stunts, and glamorously gorgeous casting. The innuendo-saturated titles showcase the stylish excess of the franchise. They have often been criticised for their preoccupation with the female body, though more recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OzX14t4dCQ0\">title sequences<\/a> have increased the visual focus on 007 himself, perhaps aiming to put the physical aspects of Daniel Craig\u2019s stardom centre-stage.<\/p>\n<p>The visual audacity of these sequences is matched and heightened by their musical accompaniment: most commonly the classic \u201cBond song\u201d, with its dramatic and often tongue in cheek lyrics, extravagant orchestration, and arresting vocals by current or up and coming stars with plenty of marketing potential. Epitomised by Shirley Bassey\u2019s recordings for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fy_PJODH3p0\">Goldfinger<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qPeSPB68i2c\">Diamonds are Forever<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8qujkMxj1-4\">Moonraker<\/a>, these performances bring a powerful and intensely personal aspect to the Bond song. Bringing in the tragic yet triumphant figure of the diva not only heightens the camp excesses of the title sequence, but also pushes music to the fore of the cinematic Bond experience.<\/p>\n<p><figure><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Little wonder then that the casting of the next Bond vocalist always creates such a buzz. Theme songs generate both direct sales and marketing capital, are an iconic element of the Bond experience, and provide a spectacular way of introducing new music and fresh voices whilst remaining true to the sound of the franchise.<\/p>\n<p>The Spectre theme\u2019s current front-runners both fit this model. Goulding\u2019s distinctive voice and electro pop styling reshapes the diva for a modern audience, whilst Radiohead bring a canonic but original sound that mirrors the familiar-yet-fresh pleasures of a new Bond film.
