{"id":4130,"date":"2015-08-07T19:28:35","date_gmt":"2015-08-07T19:28:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/?p=4130"},"modified":"2015-08-07T19:28:35","modified_gmt":"2015-08-07T19:28:35","slug":"should-shakespeare-be-taught-in-africas-classrooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/should-shakespeare-be-taught-in-africas-classrooms\/","title":{"rendered":"Should Shakespeare be taught in Africa\u2019s classrooms?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Should Shakespeare be taught in Africa\u2019s classrooms?<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/chris-thurman-178498\">Chris Thurman<\/a><br \/>\n<em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/university-of-the-witwatersrand\">University of the Witwatersrand<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Should <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shakespeareinamericancommunities.org\/education\/life-william-shakespeare\">William Shakespeare<\/a> be taught in Africa\u2019s schools and universities? It\u2019s a question that emerges, sometimes flippantly and sometimes in earnest, when conversations about post-coloniality and decolonisation turn to literature and culture.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a useful and necessary question that I &#8211; as a scholar who teaches and writes about Shakespeare in a South African context &#8211; am often asked. Indeed, it\u2019s one that I ask myself frequently.<\/p>\n<p>But it is also a clumsy question and it needs rephrasing \u2013 or, at least, the terms in which it is couched need further investigation if we are to attempt a nuanced, coherent answer.<\/p>\n<h2>Africa is not a country<\/h2>\n<p>The first problem is in generalising about the African continent. Education systems and their infrastructural or economic contexts are vastly different. This is not only true from country to country and region to region, but also within each country and region.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to speak accurately about \u201cShakespeare in Asia\u201d without accommodating the fact that his place in India &#8211; with its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/history\/british\/empire_seapower\/east_india_01.shtml\">colonial history<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/17\/world\/asia\/17iht-letter17.html?_r=0\">linguistic environment<\/a> &#8211; is a phenomenon that\u2019s almost incomparable to Shakespeare in China or in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>In Europe, national distinctions are equally severe. The history of Shakespeare\u2019s reception in <a href=\"http:\/\/theshakespeareblog.com\/2011\/07\/shakespeare-and-the-french\/\">France<\/a> is completely unlike that in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germans-count-shakespeare-as-one-of-their-own-says-festival-director\/a-5816542\">Germany<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, there\u2019s no singular \u201cShakespeare in Africa\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>An obvious division could be made between Francophone and Anglophone countries, but even these categories falter. The engagement of writers such as Frantz Fanon and Aim\u00e9 C\u00e9saire with Shakespeare\u2019s  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bachelorandmaster.com\/globaldrama\/the-tempest-as-a-play-about-colonialism.html#.VbtHO_mqqko\">\u201ccolonial\u201d<\/a> play <em>The Tempest<\/em> influenced the <a href=\"http:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/negritude\/\">Negritude<\/a> movement associated with L\u00e9opold Senghor and, through him, with Senegal. C\u00e9saire\u2019s <em>Une Temp\u00eate<\/em> was first performed in Tunisia. But this has no purchase in other Francophone African countries like Gabon or Niger.<\/p>\n<p>In Zimbabwe, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.co.zw\/2015\/02\/12\/scrap-shakespearean-literature\/\">occasional posturing<\/a>, Shakespeare is a common and largely unproblematic reference point in political speeches, newspaper articles and daily conversation.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the case in neighbouring South Africa, where there are again many different Shakespeares. He was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southafrica.info\/about\/history\/robbenisland-bible.htm#.VbtQbPmqqko\">one of Nelson Mandela\u2019s favourites<\/a> and a copy of the <em>Collected Works<\/em> was circulated among prisoners on Robben Island. Author, journalist and political icon Sol Plaatje <a href=\"http:\/\/zar.co.za\/plaatje.htm\">translated<\/a> several of Shakespeare\u2019s works into Setswana.<\/p>\n<p>But there is also the Shakespeare of \u201cwhite English liberals\u201d, and the Shakespeare invoked by the apartheid state as an example of exclusively European \u201chigh culture\u201d. Then there is the Shakespeare associated with former president <a href=\"http:\/\/mg.co.za\/article\/2008-12-23-where-is-mbekis-world-elsewhere\">Thabo Mbeki<\/a>, who was seen as something of an intellectual elitist and was ultimately recalled by the governing African National Congress.<\/p>\n<p>These examples make it clear that Shakespeare can\u2019t be viewed or read \u2013 and therefore can\u2019t be taught \u2013 in an ahistorical or apolitical vacuum. If we are to teach Shakespeare in Africa, we cannot teach the text alone.<\/p>\n<p>We owe it to students to acknowledge, indeed to emphasise, and then to analyse the baggage that Shakespeare brings with him.<\/p>\n<h2>Where does Shakespeare \u201cfit\u201d?<\/h2>\n<p>Shakespeare traditionally goes hand in hand with \u201cEnglish\u201d. In secondary schools, this implies that his work will be studied as a literary text. \u201cEnglish\u201d at high school is also about the acquisition of the English language, particularly for learners who have English as a second or additional language.<\/p>\n<p>Is the difficulty \u2013 sometimes the downright opacity \u2013 of Shakespeare\u2019s Early Modern English helpful to these learners? Probably not. Arguably, without a very skillful and enthusiastic teacher, Shakespeare\u2019s language remains obscure even to teenagers with \u201cmother tongue\u201d or \u201cfirst language\u201d English competence (this includes many bilingual learners).<\/p>\n<p>Here a case may be made for translation as a vital aspect of teaching and learning Shakespeare. Why can\u2019t extracts from Shakespeare, or even entire plays, be studied in translation into <a href=\"http:\/\/aboutworldlanguages.com\/kikuyu\">Gikuyu<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unisa.ac.za\/free_online_course\/Zulu\/Zulu.html\">isiZulu<\/a>? From these languages the work could be translated once again, into contemporary English &#8211; a much more interesting process of \u201cmodernising\u201d Shakespeare.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers could then draw on the resource of a polyglot classroom, affirming rather their undermining their learners\u2019 multilingual confidence. At the same time, Shakespeare could be placed in dialogue with African writers like Ngugi wa Thiong\u2019o or Mazisi Kunene.<\/p>\n<p>All of this hinges, however, on the awkwardness of \u201cshould\u201d. Making something compulsory usually has the effect of making it resented &#8211; and that\u2019s anecdotally the case for most learners who\u2019ve sweated over Shakespeare\u2019s plays and sonnets.<\/p>\n<p>In the final school year, or the senior years, continuity and consistency across a provincial or state schooling system requires a syllabus that offers individual schools and teachers limited choice. But where possible, it is preferable for curriculum guidelines to present Shakespeare simply as an option: a writer among many other writers.<\/p>\n<p>Learners could encounter Shakespeare productively outside of the classroom environment: on stage, on screen, modernised, translated, without the stigma of being a canonical author. Some might arrive at university without having studied him at all. Would this be a bad thing? Imagine discovering Shakespeare in a political science class, or a philosophy course \u2013 or through art history, economics or media studies.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the discipline in which Shakespeare really \u201cbelongs\u201d is drama. Sometimes that\u2019s in the context of theatre and performance; it may also be in a field like film study.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps, then, to return to the clumsy question that got us started, there\u2019s only one \u201cshould\u201d when it comes to teaching Shakespeare.
