At root, it\u2019s an effort to understand the world around us via observation and experimentation. When you think about it, that\u2019s an awful lot for one desk at <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/us\/technology\">The Conversation<\/a> to cover \u2013 here\u2019s a roundup of some of the stories we chose to focus on during 2015.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a year when we reported that only half of biomedical research studies <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/half-of-biomedical-research-studies-dont-stand-up-to-scrutiny-and-what-we-need-to-do-about-that-45149\">stand up to scrutiny<\/a> and only a third of published psychology research <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/we-found-only-one-third-of-published-psychology-research-is-reliable-now-what-46596\">could be replicated<\/a>, are you concerned your trusty science and technology editor is feeling dismayed about the state of the field? Never fear, she is not! Eighteen astronomers from around the world chose their <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/hubble-in-pictures-astronomers-top-picks-40435\">favorite images taken by Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> in honor of the 25th anniversary of its beaming awesome images back to us here on Earth. In other space news, we tracked NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-team-members-view-of-all-the-work-on-earth-it-took-to-get-new-horizons-to-pluto-44696\">New Horizons spacecraft<\/a> on its <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/in-focus-new-horizons-crisp-images-shed-new-light-on-the-origins-of-pluto-and-its-moons-44451\">Pluto fly-by<\/a>. Plenty of research this year into the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/brain-connections-predict-how-well-you-can-pay-attention-51082\">connections between our neurons<\/a> \u2013 and the idea that <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/brain-activity-is-as-unique-and-identifying-as-a-fingerprint-48723\">brain activity can be as unique<\/a> as we think of fingerprints being. One provocative article proposed we think of genes and neurons working together <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/brains-work-via-their-genes-just-as-much-as-their-neurons-47522\">like software and hardware<\/a> to make brain function possible. We looked at how all these bursts of electronic activity inside our heads manifest as behavior too. Are people at root <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/does-behavioral-economics-show-people-are-altruistic-or-just-confused-36170\">altruistic or just confused<\/a>? One engineer is working to figure out <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/scientists-at-work-cracking-sea-lions-high-thrust-low-wake-swimming-technique-45295\">how sea lions swim so efficiently and agilely<\/a>, with the hope of mimicking the technique. One <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/scientists-at-work-space-balloons-and-charged-particles-above-the-arctic-circle-46240\">launches space balloons<\/a> to unravel mysteries of the magnetosphere. One of our most active stories all year on social media made the case that <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/workaholism-isnt-a-valid-requirement-for-advancing-in-science-44555\">workaholism isn\u2019t a valid requirement for advancing in science<\/a>\u2026 nerve hit, anyone? We investigated why <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/beliefs-about-innate-talent-may-dissuade-students-from-stem-42967\">beliefs about innate talent may dissuade students from STEM<\/a>. The message: It\u2019s OK if things are challenging; you don\u2019t take classes in things you\u2019ve already mastered. We also explored the question of underrepresented groups in STEM. What\u2019s going on with <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/some-good-news-about-hiring-women-in-stem-doesnt-erase-sex-bias-issue-40212\">sex bias<\/a> in STEM positions? One used people\u2019s judgment and their home computers to <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/crowdsourcing-the-serengeti-how-citizen-scientists-classified-millions-of-photos-from-home-42930\">classify millions of wildlife photos<\/a> from the Serengeti. Biologists <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/tracking-american-eels-on-the-open-sea-to-crack-the-mystery-of-their-migration-49691\">cracked a longstanding enigma<\/a>: how the heck do eels get from where they live to where they spawn, a distance of 1,500 miles, having never been spotted? <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/apes-make-irrational-economic-decisions-that-includes-you-37491\">Apes make irrational economic decisions<\/a> \u2013 and that includes you. Once we recognize that the algorithms that help us harness all this Big Data we hear about <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/big-data-algorithms-can-discriminate-and-its-not-clear-what-to-do-about-it-45849\">can be biased<\/a>, what should we do? Heck, we even had a story about the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/talking-heads-what-toilets-and-sewers-tell-us-about-ancient-roman-sanitation-50045\">archaeology of ancient Roman toilets and sewers<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>It wouldn\u2019t be a year-end roundup without a top 10 list.
