{"id":4452,"date":"2015-12-28T16:06:10","date_gmt":"2015-12-28T16:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/?p=4452"},"modified":"2015-12-28T16:06:10","modified_gmt":"2015-12-28T16:06:10","slug":"2015-the-year-that-was-politics-and-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/2015-the-year-that-was-politics-and-society\/","title":{"rendered":"2015, the year that was: politics and society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/us\/team#emily-costello\">Emily Costello<\/a>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theconversation.com\/\">The Conversation<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>As we approach 2016, we look back at the big stories of The Conversation\u2019s politics and society desk over the past 12 months.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>ISIS, Syria and the migrant crisis<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps the biggest international story this year was the rise of the Islamic State, or ISIS; the war in Syria; and the resulting <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/dont-look-away-from-aylan-kurdis-image-47069\">crisis<\/a> that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/dec\/22\/one-million-migrants-and-refugees-have-reached-europe-this-year-iom\">latest estimates<\/a> say sent one million refugees fleeing into Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Scholars writing for The Conversation added depth to our understanding of this important story by analyzing <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/data-show-drone-attacks-doomed-to-fail-against-isis-in-syria-47014\">US strategies<\/a> affecting the war and the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/paris-attacks-push-progress-at-vienna-talks-on-syria-50711\">ongoing<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/could-an-end-to-syrias-civil-war-be-in-sight-52063\">peace negotiations<\/a>. They suggested military and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-islamic-law-can-take-on-isis-50113\">religious solutions<\/a>, assessed <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/in-fight-with-isis-home-front-remains-vulnerable-50738\">US vulnerabilities<\/a> and considered the Catch-22 of any attempt to defeat <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-warmer-embrace-of-muslims-could-stop-homegrown-terrorism-50869\">homegrown terrorists<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/isis-attacks-fueled-by-illegal-guns-and-open-societies-we-cant-afford-to-lose-50735\">open societies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In one pair of interesting reports, Jeff Bachman of American University took a hard look at President Obama\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/drone-strikes-are-they-obamas-enhanced-interrogation-techniques-35712\">military drone program<\/a> in Pakistan and Yemen. He also criticized how casualties caused by US drones are being <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-new-york-times-and-washington-post-are-ignoring-civilians-killed-by-us-drone-strikes-49416\">underreported<\/a> by The New York Times and Washington Post.<\/p>\n<h2>Mass shootings<\/h2>\n<p><figure class=\"align-center \">\n            <img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/62e528761d0685343e1c-f3d1b99a743ffa4142d9d7f1978d9686.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/files\/107014\/width668\/image-20151224-27887-1986yf0.jpg\"><figcaption>\n              <span class=\"caption\">Pallbearers release white doves.<\/span><br \/>\n              <span class=\"attribution\"><span class=\"source\">Brian Snyder\/REUTERS<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Both at home and abroad, one story kept repeating itself from the beginning of 2015 to the bitter end \u2013 a report of a mass shooting followed by a struggle to understand why these violent events happen over and over.<\/p>\n<p>Mass shootings occurred in the Paris offices of the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/we-are-all-charlie-hebdo-or-are-we-36044\">satirical<\/a> magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/media-coverage-of-charlie-hebdo-and-the-baga-massacre-a-study-in-contrasts-36225\">Charlie Hebdo<\/a>, at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, a community college in Oregon, and in <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/chattanooga-on-the-need-to-fight-terror-with-reason-44907\">Chattanooga<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-lethal-gentleman-the-benevolent-sexism-behind-dylann-roofs-racism-43534##\">Charleston<\/a> and San Bernardino.<\/p>\n<p>The most popular politics story of the year focused on misconceptions people have following <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/six-things-americans-should-know-about-mass-shootings-48934\">mass shootings<\/a>. Other top stories looked at the impact of mass shootings on <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/do-gun-purchases-go-up-after-mass-shootings-51802\">gun purchases<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/milwaukee-case-could-encourage-gun-stores-to-reduce-illegal-sales-49277\">a case<\/a> in Milwaukee that could make gun stores more careful about whom they sell to and a comparison of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-us-gun-control-compares-to-the-rest-of-the-world-43590\">gun control in the US<\/a> to the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<h2>Race, police and criminal justice<\/h2>\n<p>The summer of 2015 was the summer of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-slow-poisoning-of-freddie-gray-and-the-hidden-violence-against-black-communities-41072\">Freddie Gray<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/could-insight-policing-have-saved-sandra-bland-freddie-gray-and-others-44065\">Sandra Bland<\/a>. Black people protested in the streets of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-ferguson-erupts-45930\">Ferguson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/baltimore-riots-the-fire-this-time-and-the-fire-last-time-and-the-time-between-40926\">Baltimore<\/a>,  forging a new civil rights <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/blacklivesmatter-and-the-myth-of-a-postracial-america-46491\">movement<\/a> called <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-ferguson-and-blacklivesmatter-taught-us-not-to-look-away-45815\">#BlackLivesMatter<\/a>. In one widely read piece published in July, Alma Carten of New York University considered how the legacy of forgiveness may affect African Americans&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-the-legacy-of-slavery-affects-the-mental-health-of-black-americans-today-44642\">mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our academics shared new insights on <a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/democratic-policing-what-it-says-about-america-today-35066\">how<\/a> \u2013 and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-do-american-cops-kill-so-many-compared-to-european-cops-49696\">how well<\/a> \u2013 US police do their jobs, the equipment <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/police-should-put-away-the-military-gear-and-build-connections-with-young-people-44947\">they carry<\/a> and even cops&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/training-to-reduce-cop-macho-and-contempt-of-cop-could-reduce-police-violence-51983\">macho culture.<\/a> We looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/ray-tensing-was-trained-equipped-much-like-32-000-other-campus-cops-45542\">campus police<\/a>, the influence of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-promise-and-perils-of-predictive-policing-based-on-big-data-48366\">big data<\/a> on policing and how trouble in the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-new-orleans-police-department-was-troubled-long-before-hurricane-katrina-46381\">New Orleans Police Department<\/a> started long before Hurricane Katrina.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2026 and the election<\/h2>\n<p>Much of our attention has also been focused on a US presidential primary election that has repeatedly turned conventional wisdom on its head.<\/p>\n<p>One debate after another drew millions of TV viewers. We covered five GOP debates, including the recent one focused on <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/pass-or-fail-profs-grade-gop-foreign-policy-debate-52374\">foreign policy<\/a>, and three Democratic ones \u2013 including the so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/democratic-debate-takes-on-isis-guns-and-taxes-52575\">eggnog debate<\/a>\u201d on December 19.<\/p>\n<p>One of our most-read pieces of the year considered the voting patterns of the small but growing <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-asian-americans-dont-vote-republican-48369\">Asian-American population<\/a>. Another gave us a view of the candidates&#8217; personal <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/should-voters-care-about-candidates-religious-views-51235\">religious beliefs<\/a> and how that may affect their policy positions.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we covered Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/from-jimmy-carter-to-donald-trump-in-four-short-decades-46379\">surprising<\/a> campaign from many angles \u2013 including his <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/scholars-trumps-call-to-ban-muslims-is-un-american-52065\">anti-Muslim sentiments<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-rhetorical-brilliance-of-trump-the-demagogue-51984\">rhetorical strengths<\/a>, lack of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/trump-is-running-last-in-one-key-race-51794\">endorsements<\/a> and even his <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-donald-trump-trademarked-the-slogan-make-america-great-again-49070\">trademarked slogan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>We added new columnists<\/h2>\n<p>Our coverage was also deepened by new columnists this year.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Parker of the University of Washington covers the politics of contention on both the right and the left.
