{"id":4457,"date":"2015-12-28T16:16:31","date_gmt":"2015-12-28T16:16:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/?p=4457"},"modified":"2015-12-28T16:16:31","modified_gmt":"2015-12-28T16:16:31","slug":"2015-the-year-that-was-environment-and-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lifeandnews.com\/articles\/2015-the-year-that-was-environment-and-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"2015, the year that was: environment and energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/us\/team#martin-lamonica\">Martin LaMonica<\/a>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theconversation.com\/\">The Conversation<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>As we approach 2016, we look back at the big \u2013 even world-changing \u2013 stories of The Conversation\u2019s environment and energy coverage this year.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The biggest story of 2105 from the environment and energy desk is a clear choice but, paradoxically, its impact is still murky.<\/p>\n<p>The COP21 United Nations climate summit in December yielded the Paris Agreement, which includes <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/as-the-us-heads-to-climate-talks-it-seeks-a-plan-to-trust-but-verify-49420\">pledges<\/a> from nearly 200 countries to dramatically lower greenhouse gas emissions in the years ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Most everyone can agree that it\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/thanks-to-paris-we-have-a-foundation-for-meaningful-climate-progress-52525\">remarkable demonstration<\/a> of the world\u2019s commitment to combat climate change, but whether it\u2019s a historic turning point in greenhouse gas emissions is very much a matter of debate.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, moments after the gavel went down in Paris amid much celebration, a number of questions arose, including <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/paris-agreement-on-climate-change-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-52242\">how accountable<\/a> countries will be to their commitments and whether there will be <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-biggest-sticking-point-in-paris-climate-talks-money-49193\">sufficient money<\/a> to help developing countries <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-ethics-of-climate-change-what-we-owe-people-and-the-rest-of-the-planet-51785\">adapt to the effects of climate change<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/on-climate-developing-countries-need-more-than-betting-billions-on-clean-energy-breakthroughs-51972\">move off of fossil fuels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here in the US, the question was: could Congress and a subsequent president <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/promises-promises-how-legally-durable-are-obamas-climate-pledges-51786\">unravel or block Obama\u2019s signature climate policies<\/a>? (Short version: it wouldn\u2019t be easy.)<\/p>\n<h2>How the energy system is changing \u2013 or isn\u2019t<\/h2>\n<p>In the run-up to Paris, The Conversation published a number of articles to explore the effects of climate change and how our energy system is (<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/us\/topics\/fracking\">or isn\u2019t<\/a>) changing.<\/p>\n<p>Given how much capital is already invested in our fossil fuel-dominated energy system, it will take <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-fast-can-we-transition-to-a-low-carbon-energy-system-51018\">decades to replace the energy infrastructure<\/a>, even with climate-friendly policies.<\/p>\n<p>Our academics also explained why <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-is-low-carbon-energy-innovation-so-slow-you-can-thank-economics-101-38932\">energy innovation is so slow<\/a>, what to do about <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-is-oil-and-gas-activity-causing-earthquakes-and-can-we-reduce-the-risk-40810\">earthquakes<\/a> linked to oil and gas drilling, why <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/tesla-batteries-just-the-beginning-of-how-technology-will-transform-the-electric-grid-40142\">Tesla\u2019s home batteries<\/a> are such a big deal and how <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-rooftop-solar-is-disruptive-to-utilities-and-the-grid-39032\">rooftop solar is disrupting the power grid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The tension between our dependence on fossil fuels and climate change was a theme in many articles, including a look at the merits of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/if-a-solar-plant-uses-natural-gas-is-it-still-green-50046\">hybrid solar-and-natural gas power plants<\/a>, the emissions cost of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/as-us-shutters-aging-nuclear-plants-cutting-emissions-will-become-more-costly-50047\">shutting down aging nuclear plants<\/a>, the slow progress on <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/pumping-co2-underground-can-help-fight-climate-change-why-is-it-stuck-in-second-gear-37572\">carbon capture and storage<\/a>, Shell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/shells-abandoned-well-and-the-myth-of-the-arctic-oil-land-grab-48305\">decision<\/a> to drop plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/despite-shells-about-face-interest-in-arctic-oil-grows-47993\">drill<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/us-permits-arctic-drilling-but-questions-about-safety-remain-41940\">in the Arctic<\/a> and, most dramatically, the Obama administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-activists-playbook-behind-obamas-keystone-rejection-50357\">rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>From California to the Arctic<\/h2>\n<p>Much environmental news came from the West this year: California\u2019s punishing <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/us\/topics\/california-drought\">drought<\/a>, the rise of a <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/el-nino-what-it-will-bring-this-year-and-how-it-could-change-with-global-warming-46315\">giant El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/what-is-the-warm-blob-in-the-pacific-and-what-can-it-tell-us-about-our-future-climate-40140\">warm \u201cblob\u201d in the Pacific Ocean<\/a> that\u2019s wreaking havoc in surprising ways and the devastating <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/from-smokey-bear-to-climate-change-the-future-of-wildland-fire-management-45082\">wildfire season<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"align-center zoomable\">\n            <a <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>In climate science, we published scientists\u2019 studies on <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/shrinking-of-antarctic-ice-shelves-is-accelerating-39273\">melting ice sheets<\/a> in Antarctica, the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/improved-data-set-shows-no-global-warming-hiatus-42807\">hiatus in global warming<\/a> and whether natural variability in the atmosphere and ocean masks the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/is-the-global-warming-hiatus-over-45995\">long-term warming trend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, we focused on the fast-changing Arctic.<\/p>\n<p>We unpacked the latest science on whether a warming Arctic can explain North America\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-melting-arctic-and-weird-weather-the-plot-thickens-37314\">brutally cold weather last winter<\/a>, how quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/polar-bears-unlikely-to-compensate-for-ice-loss-in-summer-44736\">polar bears can adapt<\/a> to warming, plans to open up <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/temporary-ban-on-fishing-reflects-how-fragile-arctic-ecosystem-is-44954\">commercial fishing<\/a> and whether the far North will shift from being a <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/will-the-arctic-shift-from-a-carbon-sink-to-a-carbon-source-47826\">carbon sink to a source of carbon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Anthropocene<\/h2>\n<p>With all the changes humanity is bringing to the planet, we will most certainly hear more of the term \u201cthe Anthropocene,\u201d the notion that we are in a new geological epoch defined by our species&#8217; dominance over the Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Our academics weighed in on various aspects of the Anthropocene, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/does-nature-have-value-beyond-what-it-provides-humans-47825\">value of nature<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/setting-aside-half-the-earth-for-rewilding-the-ethical-dimension-46121\">ethics of \u201crewilding\u201d<\/a> large portions of the Earth and what <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/what-does-it-mean-to-preserve-nature-in-the-age-of-humans-39987\">preserving nature means<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the biggest newsmaker in the environment came from an unlikely source this year: the Vatican.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"align-center zoomable\">\n            <a Francis\u2019 encyclical on the environment known as <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/us\/topics\/laudato-si\">Laudato Si\u2019<\/a> raised the issue of humanity\u2019s treatment of the Earth into the realm of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/with-encyclical-pope-francis-elevates-environmental-justice-42871\">moral philosophy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-moral-and-political-force-of-pope-francis-on-climate-42874\">reached millions of people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also in politics and policy, we covered the link between the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/climate-change-and-drought-a-spark-in-igniting-syrias-civil-war-38275\">climate change-worsened drought in Syria<\/a> and its civil war.<\/p>\n<p>In Washington, DC we documented Obama\u2019s attempts to build a strong <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/obama-builds-legacy-on-climate-change-with-epa-clean-power-plan-45641\">legacy on climate change<\/a> despite his political foes.<\/p>\n<p>What did our readers
